Jeff Cooper (4 Dec 2012) - Eric Peterson and I covered 416 miles over a 13-hour period last Saturday in an effort to see some Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep north of Green River and to enjoy some birding in Emery and Carbon Counties. ... We did see an unexpected Say's Phoebe north of Green River. We saw a number of common birds, but a highlight for me was seeing several individuals of my favorite hawk species, Buteo Regalis or Ferruginous Hawk, along Hwy 6 in both Emery and Carbon County

Lloyd and Connie Logan (10 May 2012) - I looked out my kitchen window at about 7PM this evening and saw an adult Scissor-tailed Flycatcher sitting on the power lines behind our house. The location was the intersection of Utah 123 and Denver Avenue in East Carbon (west side of Sunnyside Park), Carbon County, Utah. The bird sat on the power lines long enough for my wife to come to the window and see it too. ... Having grown up in Kansas and Missouri and lived for 6 years in Texas, we are very familiar with this species - absolutely no doubt as to the identification (fifteen yards, facing us, and the sun at our back).

Steve Christensen (24 Apr 2012) - [Price, UT] - On March 31 Layne Miller, Mike Keller, Tammy Lyman, and I counted 80-90 (we all had different counts each time we tried) Turkey Vultures in trees on the south side of Price. After a couple of days half (perhaps a few more) left and went elsewhere. There are still 30-40 that roost there every night. I love Vultures. I enjoy watching them come into the trees in the evening. I have pondered why they like it here, but have come to no conclusion.

Eric Huish (17 Mar 2012) - KC Childs and I visited Spring Canyon in Helper then Scofield Resevoir.  At a stop in Indian Canyon between Emma Park Road and Hwy 6 we found a Lincoln's Sparrow and a pair of Golden Eagles.  Highlights in Spring Canyon were a Steller's Jay and a Canyon Wren, it was very quite there (only 8 species).  Scofield Resevoir is still iced over and there were several ice fishermen out standing on the ice.  We saw a Northern Shrike on the power lines next to the highway along the north arm of the reservoir.  We saw a probable Northern Goshawk flying over the hills east of the hwy at the very north end of the reservoir.  A little open water at the south end of the reservoir had Canada Geese, Mallards and a Common Merganser and there were Cassin's Finches with Pine Siskins and Am. Goldfinches at a feeder in the town of Scofield.

Oliver Hansen (4 Feb 2012) - We have been taking family trips to some of the museums around Utah lately and decided to head to the one in Price. I convinced the family to let me take an hour detour to Desert Lake in Emery Co. I was hoping the water would be opened up with all the sun and warm weather the past few days. No luck. It was all frozen up and I saw a total of 3 species out there. I did however, see a Merlin, a Western Meadowlark, and flock of 100+ Horned Larks in the Elmo/Cleveland area which made up for the 3 No. Harriers, 1 No. Flicker, and 9 Brewer's Blackbirds out at the frozen lake. Looks like a great place to hit up in the spring when the lake thaws out. Would be interesting to see what shows up there during migration. Not much else by way of water in this area (besides Huntington Res.)

Eric Huish (29 Jun 2006) - Milt, Tuula, Leena and I went birding in Carbon County today...The most interesting bird of the day was a Grace's Warbler at Price Canyon Recreation Area. ...The turn off to Price Canyon Rec Area is a few miles South of the Utah County line on the East side of highway 6 (there is a sign). The bird was in the 'day use' area (turn right at the fork) at the top of the road.

At Scofield Reservoir, several PURPLE MARTINS and a breeding-plumage COMMON LOON were seen on Friday, 07/28 (JVM).

Three BURROWING OWLS were seen on a farm in Wellington, Utah, about 10 miles south of Price, on Sunday, 07/30 (WH).

May 1999

A late sighting of two COMMON LOONS occurred along the east side of Scofield Reservoir on Friday, 05/21 (PD).
