"Local" Yellow-breasted Chats

Hello all,

While waiting for those to arrive for the Mountain Bluebird box check this past Saturday at Rainbow Gardens in Ogden, I ventured along the Rainbow Garden trail and found two YB Chats in nearby proximity, and probably feeding young. Rainbow Gardens is at the mouth of Ogden canyon, 12th street will take you there. To access the trail, park in the southwest extreme corner of the parking lot. You will see a sign that reads, "Rainbow Gardens trail" (or maybe it is just "Rainbow trail"). Just go along that path about 35-ish yards (easy walk) and when you get to a relatively straight section from which you can view the whole Rainbow Gardens parking lot very well, that is the area (BEFORE you start climbing much in elevation). That was at 7:40 AM. Later in the day, about 1:30 PM, Kris Purdy and I were passing through and we were easily able to relocate them, though it took the weird little Chat-like sounds I make to quickly see them this time. Both YB Chats had visible bugs in their mouths, not eating them, which leads me/us to believe that they have a nest nearby that we never were able to locate. I witnessed the same behavior earlier in the AM.

Brian
