A few weeks ago Harry mentioned the book "The Big Year" about North American big year attempts made by 3 birders recently. The author (a non-birder) was interviewed recently about the book on the radio show "To The Best Of Our Knowledge" heard on many public radio stations. The program can be heard in streaming audio from the show's web site at http://www.wpr.org/book/. The interview (and presumably the book, which I have not read) is an interesting look at birders, birding, and the "birding obsession" through a non-birders perspective.
