DWR Adopt a Lek Project

Justin Dolling the Wildlife Manager at the Northern Region Office of DWR (Justin was the Farmington Bay WMA Manager, until his recent promotion) is looking to enlist groups like Audubon chapters, birding clubs and other dedicated nature groups to become involved with cooperative DWR projects.  Specifically, he needs helps to monitor Sage and Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek's.  His idea is to have the interested groups "adopt a Lek."

Essentially, the group would be given designated Lek's to monitor.  It would require three visits to the Lek site from the middle of March through the middle of May.  Birds observed would be counted and reported to DWR.  They in turn will use the data for DWR management decisions regarding Grouse.  It needs to be a long term commitment, so that the data can be gathered in a consistent manner, giving it integrity for management decisions.

Would your group be interested in "adopting a Lek?"  The Lek sites are already known and would be assigned based on common agreement with your group and DWR.  The Lek's are primarily in Cache, Box Elder, Weber and Rich Counties.

Please discuss with your groups board and let me know of your interest, so that I can reply to Justin.
