Where to bird by Gateway Mall area

Being new to birding, I'm not up on many of the possible areas of interest.  For instance, my wife and son are going to be dropped off by me at the Gateway Mall area to shop and see a movie, and I wanted to find the closest area to check out that day for birding.  I will only have about an hour, so I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere close the Gateway that I can drive to.  Any suggestions would be wonderful.
