Longest Nonstop Migration

Pam Kramer, Habitat Biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources sent me this interesting piece of information on the longest "nonstop" migration of any bird:  Longest Nonstop Bird Flight Discovered:  USGS scientist Robert Gill and colleague Theunis Piersma of Holland have discovered that the bar-tailed godwit travels the longest nonstop flight of any bird.  Evidence documents that this godwit species migrates from Alaska to New Zealand (12,400 km or 7,440 miles) each year in six days and six nights at speeds of up to 80 mph, without stopping to feed or rest.  (Robert Gill, Anchorage, AK, 907-786-3514)

Enjoy the birds,
