Fwd: Agenda - August 27 Northern Region RAC Meeting

Greetings:

It would be good for everyone involved on the CRM committee initiative (both committee members and supporting organizations) to attend this meeting where Director Conway will make a presentation regarding the habitat issues with Sage-steppe.  The Sage-steppe habitat is critical to many species; it is not limited to Mule Deer.  It includes Pygmy Rabbit, Avian species such as Burrowing Owl, Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Sage Grouse, Sage Sparrow and many more.  The Sage Grouse has been petitioned for listing.

Currently there is an additional threat to this habitat with the drought cycle Utah is experiencing.  A massive die off of Sage in the Uintah Basin and near Price Utah has been described as catastrophic by DWR.  This is a major issue that we must rally around resolving for the future of Utah's Wildlife communities that use Sage-steppe habitat.

John Kimball former Director of DWR and Kevin Conway, the current director have shown leadership and vision in identifying this threat to Utah Wildlife.  It also threatens the Ranching industry who depend on grazing of BLM, USFS and state lands within the Sage-steppe zone.  They have worked at supporting the Coordinated Resource Management (CRM) in Rich County, a citizen based grass roots initiative.  The CRM initiative is centered improving the Sage-steppe habitat.  Specifically, it is working toward establishing, "rich, healthy ecosystems, countywide, without emphasis on land ownership."  The specific CRM objectives are to provide, "sustainable agriculture, sustainable wildlife, diverse recreational opportunities, as well as a vibrant rural community."

Spread the word on this important meeting and come out to be educated to the current issues and voice your opinions.

Here is the agenda for our next meeting.

We will have some excellent info presentations.  The usual Northern Region update by Bob Hasenyager.  Then an update, by Kevin Conway - DWR Director - on his Sagebrush Steppe Habitat Initiative.  Finally, a Northern Region Fisheries update (where we are and where we are going - on selected waters) by the Northern Region Fisheries staff.

For Bryce Petersen:  Would really appreciate your help advertising the Sagebrush Steppe presentation.  This is primarily a fishing meeting - but we have the opportunity to hear this presentation on a critically important topic at this meeting.  Anyone interested in Mule Deer or Sage Grouse should consider this a "must make" meeting.  We are at real a crossroads in the future of wildlife in Utah.   The Fisheries update topic will also be of great interest to avid fisherfolks.

For Jodie, Phil and all RAC members:  Please get this info out to your constituents / organizations & usual contacts.
