Flycatcher. Heard only from junipers above reservoir. Typical ka-brick and
keer-bir calls that are each less than a second in duration with several seconds
between each call. Recording is worse than thought, but the ATFL can be heard
between the 3-4 second mark (closer to the 4 second mark), but it takes good
speakers to hear it...bluetooth via a car is one way versus my laptop where the
speakers struggled to resolve it. The call was identified independently by my
dad. We are both familiar with ATFL calls and in fact had heard them call in the
desert outside of Lake Powell each morning the three previous days...one of
which I was able to record.-- Also seen: Mallard, Common Merganser, Pied-billed Grebe,

Ptarmigan. While up on the bare patches of scree slope watching blrf, i
heard a screaming vocalization with a series of ascending paired calls that
closely matched this recording: Http://www.xeno-canto.org/141892. Never saw the
bird, but the call was coming from the scree covered slope just over the ridge
from where i was and higher up. I only figured out it was wtpt later in the day
when checking various audio recordings. I wasnt aware that species was present
in this mtn range, but it appears to be a regular location for the species.

Falcon. I climbed a mountain adjacent to where I presumed falcons were
nesting. I was able to view what looked like three young in the nest. After
spending sometime watching them I descended to find a good friend of mine
looking for the adults. After conferring for awhile about what I'd seen from the
mountain we saw two people moving above the nest site. We soon learned they were
there to rappel into nest to retrieve young. I contacted UDWR since sometimes
birds are taken without permits. Several officers responded to investigate. I
was later contacted by UDWR and informed the falconers took two of the three
young and they had all the legal documents/permits to do so. I can see the pros
and cons of this from both side (birder and falconer) but personally sadden as I
have seen many nests fail with low numbers of young and the adults abandon the
nest site do to the failure. I hope the nest is successful since there are so
few public places to view these wonders of nature.

First heard three drumming in trees fairly close to each other. As I watching
one of the birds, four more flew into the tree. They acted like juveniles--lots
of wing flapping, calling and landing close to the original bird in the tree.
The drumming in the other two trees continued after the next four arrived.

Black Rosy-Finch. What a stunning bird! Made me work real hard, but patience
paid off, got great looks and decent pics. I think there were probably 2
individuals as I'm positive I heard two at once, but I'm saying 1 just to be
conservative. ABA 597!

David Hanscom (3 Oct 2014) - [Rockport Reservoir] - There were at
least 5 Common Loons at Rockport yesterday (but couldn't find any at Echo). Nice to
have them back. Hopefully the scoters and tiny geese won't be far behind.
  Aug 2014
Dave Hanscom (19 Aug 2014) - [Echo Reservoir] -
RUFF [or Reeve, since it was a female.] If you want to chase this bird, it
was very near the road on the east side of Echo Reservoir. I could see it with
my scope from the Rail Trail at the south end of the water.
  Apr 2014
Nancy Matro (26 Apr 2014) - Currently have 15
Evening Grosbeaks eating sunflower seeds in my yard in Jeremy Ranch (Park
City). I've never seen more than two in my yard before.
Bryan Shirley (21 Apr 2014) - Just finished up our
field trip to Morgan and Summit Counties. summit County didn't produce anything
uncommon, but Echo had a ton of Common Loons and a good variety of
waterfowl and other water birds near the inlet:  Blue-winged Teal, WIllet.
Dave Hanscom (13 Apr 2014) - New for the year at Echo
Reservoir this morning were White-faced Ibi.  (Is that the correct plural
of Ibis?) New for the year at Echo Canyon were a singing Canyon Wren and
a couple of White-throated Swifts.  I can't believe the wrens hang
out there with all the trains going by!
Kendall Watkins (6 Apr 2014) - My dad and I started
the morning at the Henefer Lek in Summit County. We counted a total of 29
GREATER-SAGE GROUSE and most likely overlooked several more that were
concealed in the Sagebrush. We watched grouse display for a 30 minutes before
leaving for East Canyon. If you do go to the lek in search of the grouse,
remember to be respectful and stay in your vehicles.--At East Canyon I counted 45 COMMON LOONS spread out over
the reservoir. Also of note were 13 WESTERN and 4 CLARK'S GREBES,
10+ RED-BREASTED and many COMMON MERGANSERS. We also observed a
LESSER YELLOWLEGS with several Killdeer feeding along the northeastern edge
of the reservoir. Green-winged Teal and Gadwall were the most
abundant waterfowl present...
--Echo Reservoir was next, which held the best birding of the day.
From the freeway we spotted two Osprey on a nesting platform just north
of the dam. The real highlights began at the south end of the reservoir, which
was absolutely filled with birds! We saw 20+ FRANKLIN'S GULLS, 2
HERRING GULLS, around 50 Ring-billed Gulls and thousands of California Gulls
along the shore. In the way of ducks we nearly had a clean sweep of all the
expected species, missing only Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser
and Ruddy Duck. Highlights included a HYBRID BLUE-WINGED X
CINNAMON TEAL, a drake BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1 GREATER SCAUP, and
a CANVASBACK. ... There were also
good numbers of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (25+) and close to 130(!)
COMMON MERGANSERS. This was a conservative estimate. I tried counting them
all, but there were just too many (I probably under-counted). Other water birds
included 21 Common Loons, a Horned Grebe, 5 Eared, 3
Clark's, and 16 Western Grebe's.
--On land I saw at least one Chipping Sparrow, 2
Slate-colored Juncos, Mountain Bluebirds, 2 Mountain Chickadees,
and a pair of Say's Phoebes. These were all seen on the road that runs
along the east side of the reservoir (Echo Dam Rd.).

  Feb 2014
Bryan Shirley (10 Feb 2014) -  Yesterday 6 birders braved the
weather and ended up with a decent day in Wasatch County & Summit County. ...The
wind and rain made birding slow overall ...Since it was still early we decided
to hit Summit County for about an hour before heading home. We drove along the
upper Provo River and saw a couple of Dippers, but the best bird there was a
Northern Shrike near Francis.
Bryant Olsen (7 Feb 2014) - Yesterday started out with
a pair of Wood Ducks at the Park City GolfCourse. Thanks to Nancy Matro for informing me of those. That's a hard bird to
find in Summit County.

  Sep 2013
Dave Hanscom (28 Sep 2013) - A group of 8 Long-billed Dowitchers
were feeding along the south shore of Rockport Reservoir, a bit west of the
inlet, this afternoon. Also, there was a lone Red-necked Phalarope nearby
today.
Dave Hanscom (17 Sep 2013) - There were three Common Loons at
Rockport this afternoon, along with the first Ruddy Ducks of the fall.
Also three Snowy Egrets, which are pretty unusual for the reservoir at
any time of year. Dave Hanscom (10 Sep 2013) - A flock of at least 10
Pectoral Sandpipers were at the north end ofRockport Reservoir this afternoon, near the inlet where the Pelicans were
hanging out. Also, on the west side, between the water and the road, was a nice
flock of Yellow-rumps, Gnatcatchers, Chickadees, and one Black-throated Gray
Warbler.

  Jul 2013
Joshua Taylor (30 Aug 2013) - I went out to Bald Mountain in the Uintas
(near Mirror Lake) this past weekend to look for ptarmigan and rosy-finches. I
struck out on the ptarmigan, but got great looks (as close as 20 feet) at at
least 3 and probably 5 or 6 different individual BLACK ROSY-FINCHES
scattered around the slope while I was up there. Also hiked the Highline trail
from Mirror Lake and enjoyed great looks at an adult and immature PINE GROSBEAK,
GRAY JAYS, and a few AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS. Eric Peterson (26 Aug 2013) - [Mirror Lake Highway]
- American Three-toed Woodpeckers, Pine Grosbeaks, Gray Jays, Clark's
Nutcrackers.
  Jun 2013 Nancy Metro (13 Jun 2013) - Quite a few
Bobolinks perched and flying in field on Oakley on East side of Millrace Rd
just north of first house north of Rob Young Lane. Joel Beyer (9 Jun 2013) - We did a Breeding Bird
Survey in Summit County this morning.  The most notable bird was a male
Bobolink .  It was seen southwest of the town of Oakley, on the west side of
Democrat Alley, .2 (2/10) miles south of the junction with Wooden Shoe Lane.
Also, 2 Pinyon Jays were seen just south of Hoytsville.
  May 2013
Norm Jenson (17 May 2013) - [Summit Park] - We needed a Hairy Woodpecker
and Summit Park is almost a sure thing. Birds seen: [highlights]...Hairy
Woodpecker... Steller's Jay,... Mountain
Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch,... Black-headed
Grosbeak, Pine Siskin Dave Hanscom (15 May 2013) - [Rockport] - Lots of
birds have returned to Rockport - Plumbeous Vireos, Lazuli Buntings,
Bullock's Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Spotted Sandpipers, House Wrens,
etc. No big deal for you lowlanders, but it's nice to finally have spring up
here, too. :-)
Dave Hanscom (1 May 2013) - Yesterday was a great day of birding at
Rockport...-- The Horned Grebe remained in the area just west of the
inlet. Still lots of Red-necked Grebes and Common Loons, but no
yellow bills. Didn't re-find the Western Bluebirds, but Mountain Bluebirds
were in abundance. Black-throated Gray Warblers were also in
abundance, mostly in the junipers, but there was one next to the dumping station
across the road from the park office. Also in the junipers were lots of
Chipping Sparrows, 2 Gray Flycatchers, Green-tailed Towhees,
and the Bushtits that I couldn't find for my 2012 big year. Sigh...

  Apr 2013
Dave Hanscom (25 Apr 2013) - Went over to Henefer after seeing Weston
Smith's report of a Wood Duck in the sewage ponds. Thanks for a new
county bird, Weston! Also quite a few Bonaparte's Gulls in varying
plumage. Weston Smith (22 Apr 2013) - There was a pair of
Cackling Geese as well as a pair of Wood Ducks in the South pond of
the Henefer Sewer Lagoons in Summit County at about 10:30am today.
  Dec 2012
Dave Hanscom (10 Dec 2012) - Today I had another one
of those serendipidous moments, when 2 Trumpeter Swans crossed my path.
Yesterday at Echo, there were 2 Cackling Geese, 1 Greater
White-fronted Goose, and 1 Tundra Swan. ...--On to the Wahsatch exit of I-80 to look for winter birds. More
Rough- legged Hawks were on the power poles along the west frontage road
than I'd seen before ... headed east on the dirt road from the exit. One more RL
Hawk was on a pole, and one (guess what??) COMMON REDPOLL was feeding
beside the road. I drove to the Wyoming line and turned around, and on the way
back a flock of about 30 (guess what??) Common Redpolls were feeding on mullein
seeds inside the fence at a gas facility.
--Today, to get out of the wind, I decided to check out the
campground below Rockport Reservoir, which has been closed for a while. I walked
in to the river and what should be hanging out in the pond at the base of the
dam but two Trumpeter Swans!

  Nov 2012
Dave Hanscom (4 Nov 2012) - I've had a tough time
finding raptors in Summit County this summer, but today was (finally) my day.
Weston Smith kept telling me that the place to go is the Wahsatch exit of I-80
(just east of the Wyoming border near Evanston). I'd been up there 3 or 4 times
already this year, with little success. Today's list, however, included
Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, Rough-legged Hawk, Red-tailed
Hawk, and Ferruginous Hawk. Most were soaring or perched on phone
poles in the south end of Deseret Ranch, which borders I-80 to the west in that
area. The ranch is private with a big fence around it, so I just drove along the
frontage road and set up my scope whenever I saw something that looked
interesting. The Prairie Falcon was seen about a mile east of I-80 along the
dirt road that starts at the Wahsatch exit.
Oct 2012 Dave Hanscom (15 Oct 2012) - A friend who lives in
Hoytsville has been telling me that she has Merlins in her neighborhood all
year. She has a bunch of feeders, and they stop by for lunch every few days. I
figured she must have Sharp-shinned Hawks, but didn't tell her that. ... Her
husband was home when I got there, and began regaling me with Merlin stories.
... Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a Merlin came swooping by us
and straight into a thick bunch of brushy cottonwood trees. A couple of
incredible maneuvers and he was gone, as if to say "I'll show you, Mr. Doubter!"
Pretty neat birding moment. Dave Hanscom (14 Oct 2012) - Today was another
great birding day at Rockport Reservoir.... The north end of the reservoir,
where the grebes and loons hang out, was the real jackpot. A Pacific Loon
was near the boat launch area ...That was the first one I've ever seen at
Rockport. ... Dave Hanscom (10 oct 2012) - I went for a hike up
Plantation Trail from the Beaver Creek Trail (along the Mirror Lake Highway)
late this afternoon in search of a Ruffed Grouse in Summit County.  I've
seen them there when skiing in past years.  ... When I was almost to the
car and had given up on the calling, I heard one behind me. Dave Hanscom (5 Oct 2012) - I've been stopping by
Rockport a couple times a week lately to see what might be coming in or passing
through, and it's been most productive. Two weeks ago a Nashville Warbler
was hanging out in the Russian Olives at one of the campgrounds, and a
Sabine's Gull was in the water by the inlet. On Monday the Ruddy Ducks had
returned, but no warblers or Sabine's were to be found. Today it was a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL! Jack Binch (3 Oct 2012)- Bob Huntington, Bob
MacDougal, Steve and Cindy Sommerfeld and I were on Tri-county Peak this last
Saturday watching for rumored hawks. A Dusky Grouse came up the side of
the hill and sat down maybe twenty feet from us and just watched. I am sure it
felt its camouflage was keeping it hidden.
Sep 2012 Dave Hanscom (21 Sep 2012) - Rockport turned out to
be a hot spot today. I started in the campgrounds and discovered that all the
Russian Olive trees were full of warblers. Mostly Yellow-rumped, but I
also found Yellow, Orange-crowned, and NASHVILLE. The water
was full of grebes - Western, Clark's, and Eared. I saw one with a
really white face, but it was too far away to be sure enough to call it a
Horned. Hopefully I can get a better look some day soon.--Best sighting of the day was a SABINE'S GULL. Never
thought I'd find one over there, but when I saw a small brown gull from the
highway on my way home, I figured I'd better walk down as close as possible to
get a better look...

Jul 2012 Dave Hanscom (29 Jul 2012) - Finding peeps at
Rockport has been quite a spotty endeavor lately (pun intended). My previous
trip was a bust, with only a half dozen Spotties to be found. Yesterday was a
different story. With the help of the sharp eyes and ID skills of Bobs
MacDougall and Huntington, we were able to find Bairds, Least, Solitary,
Spotted, and Western Sandpipers, along with one lonesome Dowitcher.
The numbers weren't high, but the variety certainly was good.--Next stop was Washington Lake in search of a Pine Grosbeak
for the Bird Nerd. We succeeded on that score, and added a Brown Creeper
to our list as well. At Mirror Lake we were able to find a Three-Toed
Woodpecker, but no Gray Jays.
 Dave Hanscom (21 Jul 2012) - I had a couple of
hours this afternoon before the showers started, so I headed over to Rockport to
see what might be hanging out on the mud flats. No disappointment. Hanging out
with literally dozens of Spotted Sandpipers were 2 PECTORALS and 1
Western...--Yesterday I went for a run/hike up Shingle Creek to see if I
could find a Ruffed Grouse. No luck with that, but a Gray Jay did drop by
to say hello just below East Shingle Creek Lake. After a number of visits to
several Mirror Lake campgrounds without finding one, I'm convinced that much of
this birding game is just plain luck! :-)

  Jun 2012
Dave Hanscom (10 Jun 2012) - Finally! I found one of my Summit County
nemesis birds today, a Canyon Wren at Echo Canyon. Actually, "found"
isn't quite the right word. Kris Purdy told me to drive 1.5 miles up the canyon
from the I-80 exit, pull into the parking area at the base of the cliff, and
listen for a wren. ... Well, it took me three visits, but it finally worked. The
wren popped out on a rock and sang to me for a couple of minutes. Dave Hanscom (9 Jun 2012) - Four of us had a nice
morning of birding along the Summit County side of the Mirror Lake Highway
yesterday before the wind picked up. Thanks to the sharp eyes of Merrill Webb,
Kim Roush, and Nancy Matro, we found the following (and more):...--area between Washington Lake and group campsite - Pine
Grosbeak, Three-toed Woodpecker
--Bald Mountain Summit - from the parking area we could see the
Rosy Finches walking on the snow below the cornices...

  May 2012 Kimberly Roush (26 May 2012) - There is a
Swainson's Hawk hanging out around Kimball Junction, Park City. It swooped
right over the hood of my car. I had left my binoculars on the front stoop and
for the first time ever thought "See, I did not even need them!"... Kris Purdy (20 May 2012) - Thanks to Wes Smith for
finding the Henefer, Summit County site for BOBOLINKS last year. I
visited the spot this morning and saw four males; .... --I also visited Echo’s red cliffs at the junction of I-80 and I-84
and oh, my! What a hubbub of activity. The best cliff nesters I saw were many
White-throated Swifts and a Peregrine Falcon....
Kimberly Roush (15 May 2012) - So shocked when I
returned home last night to see a California Quail in our yard at 7000
feet in Pinebrook, Park City. We are just over the summit of Parley's Canyon.
  Mar 2012 Dave Hanscom (30 Mar 2012) - I made a loop around
Echo Reservoir this afternoon and was pleased to find several new birds for
2012. There were many common loons, a flock of AW. Pelicans cavorting
about, a pair of Osprey on the nest on the east side of the road about a
mile north of Coalville, and a flock of Turkey Vultures near town. An
hour well spent! Dave Hanscom (28 Mar 2012) - A friend who lives in
Summit Park emailed me a few days ago to say that she'd seen Evening
Grosbeaks on Matterhorn Drive. I finally got up there yesterday, and was
pleased to find a flock hanging out in some aspens. Matterhorn is the highest
street in Summit Park. Dave Hanscom (22 Mar 2012) - The ice in Rockport is
starting to disappear, although there's still not a lot of open water. Three
Red-breasted Mergansers were hanging out with one Common this afternoon.
Despite about 30 minutes of looking, I wasn't successful in finding any
pink-legged gulls. But I know there must be a Herring somewhere in that herd!
 Kimberly Roush (1 Mar 2012) - Cassin's Finches
normally visit our feeders in winter. This is the first one I recall at the
feeder this winter. Beautiful male.

  Jan 2012 Kimberly Roush (16 Jan 2012) - This afternoon 18
Common Ravens flew over ridge between Pineridge and Toll Canyon, Park
City.
Jul 2011 Bernie Sloan (12 Jul 2011) - Went back to the
stretch of Summit County rail trail where I saw my first mystery "sparrow".
Several people suggested Green-tailed Towhee as a possibility. I did manage to
find a Green-tailed Towhee in the brush. Not sure if the bird I saw last time
was a Green-tailed Towhee, but this bird definitely was. A new life
bird!!
Bernie Sloan (6 Jul 2011) - Rail trail out of Park City. I decided to
walk the trail and do some birding. Nice trail, especially the part that heads
east(?) out of Park City towards I-80. Nice wetlands, beaver dams, beaver
lodges, etc. Cinnamon Teal. One male, in wetlands, with a half dozen
Mallards. They're probably common in the West, but where I come from in the
Midwest they can (and have) sparked Rare Bird Alerts. Black-headed Grosbeak.
Male and female. Moving across the trail, heading up the mountain into the
scrub.

  Jun 2011 Dave Hanscom (24 Jun 2011) - Never thought I'd see
an Ash- throated Flycatcher in Summit County, but one was flying around
near the road just north of the marina. ... Other highlights were Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, Cooper's Hawk (with a breakfast mouse), Plumbeous
Vireo, lots of Rough-winged Swallows, Lazuli Buntings, both
American and Lesser Goldfinches, Green-tailed Towhees, a
Bullock's Oriole, and a couple of Clark's Grebes braving all the
rubble floating around in the water.
  May 2011 Bill Fennimore (23 May 2011) - I led a bird walk
Saturday at the Swaner EcoCenter (Kimball Jct) and saw a small flock of
Bobolinks. The males were singing. It's the first time that I have seen them
there... Karl Mellor (4 May 2011) - I recently hung a bird
feeder on my back porch and today I spotted a male and female VERMILLION
FLYCATCHER sitting on the feeder right in front of my window. I was stunned
to see this bird so far north and at such a high elevation. We are located in
Hoytsville, Utah, just 10 miles east of Park City, and our elevation is about
5500 feet. I'll watch for them again tomorrow and see if they return.
  Apr 2011 Ryan Jones (10 Apr 2011) - There is a great
opportunity to see a pair of nesting Ospreys in Coalville. A nesting
platform has been built behind the Best Western Hotel just off of the
interstate. It is easily viewed from a vehicle, as it is only 30 or so yards
from a paved road. Jon Watkins (9 Spr 2011) - [Echo Canyon and
Reservoir]: Kendall is more sure than I am, but because I'm the one posting, and
am no expert, I'll say possible Baird's Sandpiper in the mud flats at the
far south shore...-- Also at Echo: 4 Red-breasted Mergansers (3 at far NE
corner near dam), Common Mergansers, many Mountain Bluebirds, 2
Vesper Sparrows, a Say's Phoebe, 1 Cormorant, many Common
Loons,...
 -- East Canyon:
Several Common Loons,
Western Grebe, Gadwall, Northern Shovelers, Green-winged
Teal, Kestrel, 2 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Golden Eagles
(just east of the reservoir toward Henefer, perched in tree at top of ridge to
the south).

  Mar 2011

Dave Hanscom (11 Mar 201) - On my way to go skiing up toward Wolf Creek
Pass on Wednesday, I decided to take the long way and check out Lower River Road
for Waxwings and Grosbeaks.  No luck on either of those, but I did find a
Lewis' Woodpecker hanging out by the corner of 1000 East.  That was a Summit
County first for me, which was a nice bonus.
Nov 2010 Kristin Purdy (3 Nov 2010) - The number of
SURF SCOTERS at
Rockport State Park, Summit County, has
grown to three since Sunday when Dean DiTommaso reported a female-type bird
there. The three were at the southeast area of the reservoir this morning, where
I observed them from the access road to the Pinery Day Use Area. All three are
female-types, but I suspect that one of them is a juvenile male. Kristin Purdy (2 Nov 2010) - The EVENING
GROSBEAK that came circling above my head calling a persistent “Tewp! Tewp!”
at Echo Reservoir in Coalville, Summit County, must have been my consolation
prize this morning for not finding the Black Scoter or his attendant flock of
scaup that Dean DiTommaso found there yesterday.  I feel sadly confident that I
covered the reservoir thoroughly and that the flock has flown the coop. Bummer.
  Oct 2010 Dean DiTommaso (31 Oct 2010) - [Echo Reservoir] I
observed a drake Black Scoter this afternoon at the Echo Reservoir north
of
Coalville. It was among a group of about 30 ducks, mostly
lesser scaup. Probably the best place to look for it is the viewing area
off I-80E at MP 165 or 166. Go to the north end of the viewing area and look
north.- [Rock Port Reservoir] - I also saw an immature/female Surf
Scoter at the Rockport Reservoir. It was close to the eastern shore and more
toward the southern end of the reservoir.
Dave Hanscom (24 Oct 2010) - Lots of
Common Loons and
Western Grebes on the water, as well as a small flock of Eared Grebes
and a few
DC
Cormorants, but nothing unusual to report at Rockport.
  Sep 2010 Kimberly Roush (26 Sep 2010) - Saturday, Sept 25 a
second adult LEWIS'S WOODPECKER showed up. The juvenile and the first
adult had been here since September 19th.
  Aug 2010 Ryan O'Donnell (24 Aug 2010) -  This weekend,
Craig Fosdick, Carl Stiefel, and I camped and hiked in the Uinta Mountains. Our
main target bird was White-tailed Ptarmigan, which we did not find. We camped at
the East Fork of Black's Fork Campground, and hiked about 5.5 miles up to Bald
Mountain, then spent a day up there wandering around above 11,000 feet elevation
in search of ptarmigan. Highlights included two PINE GROSBEAKS heard
along the trail, up to five AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS at one time
in the campground, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK along the trail, dozens - maybe
hundreds - of AMERICAN PIPITS near the summit, and three TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS at various locations. RED CROSSBILLS were heard each day and
seem to be a different call "type" than what breeds up in Cache County, but I
don't know the types well enough to say which they were. One DOWNY WOODPECKER
was a bit of a surprise at 10,162 feet elevation. GRAY JAYS were common
here - a treat for us Cache County residents where the bird is the subject of
legend only. All DARK-EYED JUNCOS seemed to be pure GRAY-HEADED subspecies,
another difference from Cache County where our breeders are all the Pink-sided
subspecies. Oliver Hansen (17 Aug 2010) - ...The highlight for
me was seeing about 10 White-tailed Ptarmigan about 100 feet from the
summit of Bald Mountain (the one east of East Black's Fork campground/trailhead,
not the one on by Mirror Lake) at about 11,650 feet or so. The talus rocks and
greenish brown ground cover up there made it almost impossible to see them. I
only noticed them because one flushed when I nearly stepped on him. I
immediately stopped to admire his red eye patch and super bright white
underbelly....
  Jul 2010 Dave Hanscom (26 Jul 2010) - ...  Near the end
of a trail run up Shingle Creek and down Coop Creek, I scared up a family of
Dusky Grouse. These canyons are on the north side of the Mirror Lake
Highway. Dave Hanscom (24 Jul 2010) - After reading Bryant
Olsen's post last summer, I tried a couple of times to find the ptarmigan on
Mount Baldy (which is above the East Fork of Black's Fork on the north slope of
the Uintas). My first trip was interrupted by a lightening storm, and the second
turned out to be a really cold windy autumn day on the summit with no sign of
life.  Jeff Bilsky and I plotted at the Brighton Bird Count to give it
another shot on Pioneer Day, which seemed like a great time to be as far from SLC as
possible. And my third try turned out to be a charm!  ...we managed to find
three White-tailed Ptarmigan right where Bryant reported them last
summer - on the southwest slope near the top of the peak.
Kimberly Roush (2 Jul 2010, Park
City) - I was zooming along, binocular - less, on my trail.  I halted when
I heard/saw something unusual.  "Why," I asked myself, "is that tiny magpie
singing like a grosbeak?"  I tried to turn it into a towhee but it began to
turn it's head and it became a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK!!!
  Jun 2010 Dave Hascom (30 June 2010) - A Ruffed Grouse
flushed in front of me on the Iron Canyon trail in Park City yesterday at about
9:00 am.
Dave Wheeler ( 28 June 2010) - I went out with Mark Stackhouse to the
Mirror Lake area of the High Uintas
on Saturday.  We did not see any rarities.  Mark was mostly interested in
photographing wildflowers, while I was out trying to find the Gray Jay
for my year list.  We both found what we sought at the
Mirror Lake Campground,
which is open but not yet inhabited by any but a few fishermen.
 Paul  Higgins (19 June 2010) - Clark's
Nutcrackers, Juveniles and Adults, Trial Lake, Summit County, Utah. Kristin Purdy (14 Jun 2010) - Had to scratch an itch today; the task
was to find BOBOLINKS in Kamas Valley, Summit County...The birds were in
three places in the north and west sides of the valley... David Wheeler (5 Jun 2010) - ...Highlights: ...
EVENING GROSBEAK was atop one of the high roads in Summit Park yesterday
evening. I'd been looking for them all winter and spring with no luck. Kimberly Roush (1 Jun2010) - .[Pinebrook] ..
for the first time have a female Western Tanager at my feeder. They
occasionally come through the yard but never stay and feed.
  May 2010
D Knight (28 May 2010) Rose
breasted grosbeak at feeder, several days in a row
in Woodland, Utah
Kimberly Roush (28 May 2010) - [Pinebrook, UT] 1st
ever that I have seen at this location starting 1998: INDIGO BUNTING in
Pinebrook this am. Two
little MacGillivray's Warblers dodging through my yard also.
Jan 2010 Kimberly Roush ( 28 Feb 2010) - Still buried in snow so
nice to see a Redtail [Hawk] return! Right over the ridge between
Pinebrook and Summit Park.
Nov 2009 Lu Giddings (21 Nov 2009) - [Bohemian Waxwing along
the Mirror Lake Highway]  Only one seen, in the company of about 150 cedar
waxwings at MM 12.1. Dave Hanscom (3 Nov 2009) - As I was running across the
Park Meadows Golf Course in Park City yesterday, I saw a Cackling Goose amongst the hundred or two Canada Geese
that have been hanging out there lately...

  Sep 2009
Tim Avery (20 Sep 2009) - I photographed what looks like a
fall Bay-breasted Warbler in the French Hollow area above Strawberry
Reservoir Saturday Evening. I didn't have binoculars and only snapped one
picture before the bird flew off into the forest.

Aug 2009 Kimberly Roush (29 Aug 2009) - My first sighting of a
SWAINSON'S HAWK in Park City this year.  It was flying over the small
sagebrush field sandwiched between the library, the Olympic Park and Whole
Foods, viewed from  the light at the junction of 224 and the turn off for
the Olympic Park. Kristin Purdy (9 Aug 2009) - I hiked the Bald Mountain
Trail in the Uinta Mountains, Summit County, this morning, hoping to see
BLACK ROSY-FINCHES. I eventually saw one or the same bird two times... Bird
activity along the Mirror Lake Highway was light this weekend, perhaps due to
the cold temperatures. Vehicles were covered with frost this morning. Still, I
saw a few of those high mountain specialties, like a female PINE GROSBEAK
at Crystal Lake and a handful of CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS there and at Mirror
Lake. Colby Neuman (3 Aug 2009) - A birder from Quebec reported
seeing a Great Black-backed Gull at Echo Reservoir on July 6th. The
observer did not realize the significance of the sighting, and had this to say
about the sighting... "We saw it amongst a flock of California gulls, and
stopped by the roadside to have a closer look. All we saw was a bulky,
black-mantled gull, too large in my opinion for a lesser BB Gull, but that's
it."It appears anyone visiting Echo and surrounding reservoirs should be on the
lookout for a dark mantled gull.

Jul 2009
Kris Purdy ( 9 Jul 2009) - I saw a report this morning with photos of a male
Rose-breasted Grosbeak from Park City, Summit County. The resident noted her
elevation is 7,350 feet and said the bird has visited her feeders several times over the last
month. Has this been the year of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak in Utah, or what?!?

  May 2009
Tim Avery (17 May 2009) - There is a Yellow-billed Loon at The dam at
Rockport Reservoir right now. It is with a Common Loon.  (Photos)
Weston Smith (18 May 2009)  - The Yellow-billed Loon was on Rockport
from 11am to noon today. It was hanging out on the east side in the cove closest
to the dam. The bird did come out to about the middle of the dam when a fishing
boat went into the cove but then was working back toward the cove when we left.
There were four Common Loons fishing in and around the dam. Also it seemed like
the Yellow-billed would stay under water for twice as long as the Commons.
Tim Avery (23 May 2009) - This is absolutely insane. Jeff Bilsky and I detoured
from our county big day just over the line in Summit Park at Parley's Summit. We
first heard the chattering and then located the single largest flock of
Crossbills, let alone ALL White-winged that I have ever seen. The
birds were moving all over and feeding on the ground, in the shrubs and in the
trees.

Mar 2009 Dave Hanscom ( Mar 2009) - My wife and I skied the Beaver Creek Trail (along
the Mirror Lake Highway) last Thursday. We saw a flock of Red and
White-winged Crossbills (ho hum), but the best sighting of the day was the
Ruffed Grouse that wandered across the trail in front of us, seemingly
unimpressed with our presence. Pretty neat!

Feb 2009 Dave Hanscom (12 Feb 2009) - This morning, as I was driving through the Park Meadows neighborhood of Park City ...As I looked around, I noticed a bunch of other birds in nearby spruce trees. These were mostly House Finchs, Pine Siskins, and Juncos, usual fare for Park City. Much to my amazement, however, sitting right on top of one of the trees was a White-winged Crossbill! Upon closer examination of the other birds in the group, I found a juvenile Red Crossbill as well. Jeff Bilsky (8 Feb 2009) - Today was a great day of birding - as predicted. I woke up thinking I'd goto Farmington Bay for Gulls but I never actually made it there....Started in Francis to see if I could find the Rusty Blackbird or whatever else might be around and found a WHITE THROATED SPARROW at the intersection of 1000 East and Lower River Road. This was a Utah life bird for me. Also around the area were a HERMIT THRUSH and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and still a handful or so of EVENING GROSBEAKS. A couple Elk grazed on the hillside. It began to snow right before I found the WTSP and I decided to bail and head back down to the valley.
Jeff Bilsky (8 Feb 2009) - This morning at about
10:30 am in Francis, I found a WHITE THROATED SPARROW at the corner of 1000 East
and Lower River Road on the North side of the road in the bushes. ... No Rusty Blackbird. No Waxwings at all. A handful of EVENING GROSBEAKS were
around and some other decent birds. Shelly Spencer (2 Feb 2009) - I am really glad
others were able to spot the female Rusty Blackbird. I spotted this bird
between Lower River Road and Spring Hollow Road. I was also lucky to see
Evening Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings and lots of Robins... It was a fabulous
day to bird on Saturday.

Jan 2009 Glenda Cotter (2 Feb 2008) - I also saw and photographed Shelly Spencer's
Rusty Blackbird in Francis on Saturday [1/31] , though it's a very distant
and not terribly helpful photo. And like Gary Nunn I concluded I was seeing a
lone and slightly oddly-plumaged Brewer's Blackbird, though Rusty Blackbird got
a fair amount of consideration before I dismissed it. Cool to see such excellent
documentation! Thanks, Shelly. Gary Nunn - La Jolla CA - (27 Jan 2009)  - Just in Salt Lake City for a
couple of days and thought I would take a look along Lower River Road near
Francis for grosbeaks and waxwings, wow what a great place for some of my
favorite birds.   Immediately after turning south off Rt. 32 on Lower
River Road chanced on Northern Shrike sitting out in the first large
meadow on the right atop dead tree! Views further back to the trees lining the
river revealed several Bald Eagles (2 adult and an immature). About 1.2 miles
going south down Lower River Road encountered spectacular 200+ group Evening
Grosbeak taking chokecherry bushes to pieces, at close quarters the
crackling sound of kernels being worked over was astonishing! More grosbeaks
arrived, I would say 300-400 total working two main areas of heavy crop cherry
along the road. Wish I had a camera, tightly packed grosbeaks in the snow
encrusted bushes with sun coming on to them was a fantastic sight... Numerous
small groups of Cedar Waxwing (60-80 total) also feeding on chokecherry and
perched around in leafless aspens. After about an hour I heard the unmistakable
calling of Bohemian Waxwing! Last time I heard those was 20 years ago in
England! Located a single bird atop aspen tree, dark undertail coverts, white
wing markings, lower pitched and richer "preet" rolling trill was easy to pick
out among shrill Cedar Waxwings. Two more called back from trees nearby and
eventually the three birds gave me a flyover together. ...Many thanks to Tom
Fletcher for original posting and responding to my enquiry. Tom Fletcher (25 Jan 2009) - I braved the snow this morning to go look for
the Evening Grosbeaks near Francis. There was an amazing flock of 300+ Evening
Grosbeaks on the Lower River Rd. Amongst them, I counted 20 Bohemian Waxwings
(but there were probably more). The Bohemians seemed to outnumber the Cedars in
the flock.

Nov 2008 Kris Purdy (3 Nov 2008) - A birding friend of mine, Brian Nosker, reports
seeing flocks of both Red and White-winged Crossbills in the area of
Marsh Lake, Summit County, while elk hunting on the north slope of the Uintas
this week. Marsh Lake is due south of Mountain View, Wyoming, and just south
  of the Wyoming border.

  Jun 2008 Lu Giddings (4 Jun 2008) - A Three-toed Woodpecker
was seen at 10 a.m. this morning across the road from the Bald Mountain trail
head on the Mirror Lake highway. As of early this afternoon the road has been
cleared to a few hundred yards beyond the Hayden Peak overlook. While it has
been plowed, the trail head parking lot remains under a great deal of snow, as
do Trial Lake, Lost Lake, and the rest of the high country. Jan 2008 Jim Woolf (5 Jan 2008) - A White-winged Crossbill has
been seen coming to feeders at a private residence in the Park City area but
the owners do not wish to have any  visiting birders. It was first reported
around Dec. 11 and was seen (and photographed) again on Jan. 4. It is hanging
out with a flock of pine siskins. Nov 2007 Jack Binch (17 Nov 2007) - I got a Bohemian Waxwing in my yard this
week, so I went up on the Mirror Lake Highway to see how many were there. I
saw a flock of about fifty at Co-op Creek and that is all. I drove up to
Soapstone Basin and back several times but did not see anymore. There were a
few Townsend's Solitaires along the way. I drove down to the Lower Provo River
campground area and saw my first Ruffed Grouse of the year. I decided to see
if there were any waxwings in Kamas, and started down. I saw a lump in a snag
at about milepost 9.9 and knew if it was a bird it had to be a Northern
Pygmy-Owl. Sure enough the little guy was in the top of the tree. (11:32
AM and cloudy) I went back to the car to get my other lens for a better photo
and he left. I put some lime green tape around a road sign of a cow to mark
the spot. Oct 2007 Kathy and Joel (15 Oct 2007) - Late this afternoon we
checked out Rockport and Echo Reservoirs in Summit County. Birds of interest
were a Pectoral Sandpiper and a juvenile Herring Gull at Rockport, and a
Greater White-fronted Goose and at least 20 Common Loons at Echo. Sep 2007 Kathy and Joel (19 Sep 2007) - An immature Sabine's Gull
was at Echo Reservoir (Summit Co.) this evening, in a group of several
California and Ring-billed Gulls. Also at the reservoir were a couple of
  Franklin's Gulls, a Forster's Tern, 7Sandhill Cranes, 2 Marbled Godwits, and 2
Common Loons. Aug 2007 Craig Fosdick (16 Aug 2007) - I just completed a 3˝ day camping trip to
Mirror Lake and the Uintas.... On 8/15, I watched a female Three-toed
Woodpecker foraging on what I think was a huge Lodgepole Pine (I was much
more interested in the bird than the tree) at TRIAL LAKE CG, about 50-m east
of campsite 55. Jul 2007 Kris Purdy (22 Jul 2007) - Yesterday afternoon between 3 and 6 pm a noisy
bunch of Three-toed  Woodpeckers kept me busy chasing them around
Crystal Lake in Summit County along SR-150. I saw between six and eight
woodpeckers and may have seen more because I didn't count an adult male and
female twice even though I saw adult birds several times. I believe there were
two different family groups. Dana Green (11 Jul 2007) - Yesterday evening when driving into Ogden to visit
kids, I saw a Scissortail Flycatcher perched on a sign between t;he I-84
cutout and the sign for Henifer and Eden. Sorry, I can't be more specific but it
took me awhile to realize I wasn't in Texas anymore. Arnie wouldn't go back for
a scissortail. It was on a small rectangular green sign. Jun 2007 Colby Neuman (18 Jun 2007) -  Don Youso (from FL) and I went up the
Mirror Lake highway early this morning in search of Black Rosy-Finch and
White-winged Crossbill. ...walked to the east along the south slope of Bald
Mountain. While scanning the remaining snow patches for rosy-finch, I heard a
Black Rosy-Finch in the distance, and after awhile, we had two Black
Rosy-Finch fly right over heads before they circled around to the south and
out of sight. We decided to head back to the car after scanning the slope for
about 30 more minutes with no success besides two birds foraging on a very
distant snowpatch. While walking back up to the pass with crossbills flying all
around us, we stumbled upon two immature White-winged Crossbills perched
on a branch 20 ft away at eye level. They sat quite obligingly for several
minutes. Jack Binch (16 Jun 2007) - The White-winged Crossbill is still at the
Kennedy Group Campground at Washington Lake. It was in the trees at the end of
the road around the circle. Thanks to the Beyers, Bob Huntington and I found it
this morning at about 9:30 AM. Another birder walked up with us and also saw the
bird, but I cannot remember his name. It was a Utah life bird for me. :-) Joel and Kathy (11 Jun 2007) - On Sunday afternoon we did some hiking and
driving along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway (Hwy 150, mostly Summit Co.). At the
Washington Lake group campground we saw a female White-winged Crossbill
and a couple of Red Crossbills. Also in this campground was a pair of
Williamson's Sapsuckers, making repeated visits to an aspen covered in sap
wells. Earlier on Sunday morning we found a female Varied Thrush along
Highway 65 (Summit Co.). Coming from Henefer, drive south along Hwy 65 about
5(?) miles to the large drive-through pullout (which is about a mile past the
last house/ranch buildings). There are a large number of tall cottonwood trees
and dense vegetation here, and the small stream crosses under the road. May 2007 Weston Smith (14 May 2007) - I live in Croydon, Ut(Morgan county) about 200
yards from Summit county and had two Eurasian Collared-Doves in my back
yard last week, they flew towards Henefer.  So there are Eurasian Collared
Doves in Summit county at least in Henefer. Jan 2006 Dave Hanscom (27 Jan 2006) - For those of you who enjoy cross country
skiing or snowshoeing, there's a  Three-toed Woodpecker hanging out by
the Beaver Creek Trail up on the Mirror Lake Highway. He's about a half mile
above the second parking area (the one near the small barn that's visible from
the highway). The bird was pecking at a pine tree on the south side of the
trail. Nov 2005 Kristin Purdy (22 Nov 2005) - I saw an adult Greater
White-fronted Goose...at...Echo Reservoir in Summit County this afternoon
around 12:30. The goose was sticking with a bunch of Canada Geese at the inlet
end of the water. The Canadas and the GWFG swam south from deeper water and
eventually climbed out onto mudflats. The GWFG's irregular black marks on the
belly and the bright orange legs were nicely obvious when the bird was
standing on ice or on the mud...Other birds at Echo this afternoon included a
couple Common Loons, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Western Grebes and a pair of
female Hooded Mergansers swimming south from the dam. Jul 2005 Jack Binch (1 Jul 2005) - Bob Huntington and I tried Mirror
Lake again. ...At the group area at Washington Lake we found three Pine
Grosbeaks, and at the overflow parking lot we found a male Williamson's
Sapsucker. The gate was closed, but I think it is about to open. Mar 2005 Pomera M. Fronce (7 Mar 2005) - ...Rockport Reservoir produced many beautiful
Common Mergansers and Mountain Bluebirds and a Barrow's Goldeneye... Jan 2005 Tuula Rose - Saturday morning (Jan 22, 9am) UC birders on a field trip saw a
White-throated Sparrow in Francis, Summit Co. When approaching Francis
from the west on SR-32, just below the hill, turn right on Lower River Road. It
meanders following the Provo River past a few houses. Take the first road to the
right, I think it was 1000 E. About a block or so there is a white house on the
left with feeders in front of the windows. The sparrow was seen in the bushes
left of the house by the fence in front, and later in the cottonwoods before you
come to the house by the dog pen (two big white dogs). Kristin Purdy (21 Jan 2005) - I saw four (FOUR!) Horned Grebes at Echo
Reservoir in Summit County today...I came across about a dozen [Bohemian
Waxwings] on the way home in the tiny town of Peoa, north of Oakley. Peoa is
located on SR-32. The highway is actually the main street through town. The
Bohemians were feeding in a heavily-laden crab apple tree in the front yard of a
small white house numbered 5627, west side of the road... Lu Giddings (7 Jan 2005) - About 35 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches were
seen in trees at 235 W Lower River Road in Francis at about 1:15 this afternoon.
No black rosy finches were observed. The house sits well up above the road.
Several feeders could be seen in trees behind it... Dec 2004 Deedee O'Brien (17 Dec 2004) - A large flock of Bohemian Waxwings is
still in the Uinta/Kamas area. Lucky for us, they flew over our car as we headed
home from hiking along the North Fork trail. They landed in a small group of
trees near the highway, so got very good looks with my scope. This was just east
of Upper Setting Rd and 8.4 miles east of the high school in Kamas at 2:10pm
today Friday, Dec 17th. A long-looked for lifer! Nov 2004 Dave Hanscom (25 Nov 2004) - ...Today I went to Kamas for the third time in
search of the Bohemian Waxwings that have been reported over the past
couple of weeks. And today I finally found them - feasting happily on crab
apples next to the LDS Church (at the corner of 100 W. and Center St). As
previously reported, there are at least a couple hundred of them in the flock.
Pretty amazing sight! (16 Nov 2004) - Merrill Webb found a flock of about 30 Bohemian Waxwings
this morning (Tuesday) at about 10:00 AM in Kamas near the post office at 100 N.
100 West.  There are some Cedar Waxwings mixed in with them... Joel and Kathy Beyer (14 Nov 2004) - This afternoon we checked out the
section of the Mirror Lake Highway visited by Lu yesterday. ...during our three
hours of exploration we observed several times a large (100+) flock of
Bohemian Waxwings that was flying around the area, settling in the trees for
less than a minute before taking to flight again. Smaller groups of Bohemians
were also seen many times, probably breakaways from the main group. Some of the
other birds seen were incredible numbers of Townsend's Solitaires, a Goshawk,
Cooper's Hawk, Golden Eagle and White-breasted Nuthatches. All these birds were
seen between mile markers 10 and 14. Oct 2004 Kristin Purdy (31 Oct 2004) -...this afternoon. Three Surf Scoters
swam at the south end of Rockport Lake. One scoter was an adult male in
Beeee-YOU-teous breeding plumage, and the other two were juveniles. They were
adjacent to the Pinery Day Use area and close enough to see daylight through the
adult's nostril (not that I was looking up its nose or anything, but...) with a
scope at 20x... Dennis Shirley (18 Oct 2004) - ...On the way home I stopped at Echo Reservoir
and found three more Surf Scoters... They were all immature birds... Tim Gorman (11 Oct 2004) - I got three good looks this morning of an adult
male Williamson's Sapsucker at mile 45.3 of the Mirror Lake Highway (UT
150)... Sep 2004 Tim Gorman (10 Sept 2004) - Jim LaRue and myself spent 4 days this past Labor
Day weekend up in the top of the Henry's Fork Drainage in the High Uintas
Wilderness....Birds of the trip were: ...Northern Goshawk, Merlin,
Peregrine Falcon ...Red-necked Phalarope ...Three-toed Woodpecker
...Black Rosy-Finch... Jul 2004 Hal & Kathy Robins - On July 14th we were birding at 9,200 feet (expansive
open meadow bordered by lodgepole pine) andidentified a Bendire’s Thrasher. It was 50 feet in front of us for about
10 minutes, criss-crossing a dirt road continuously catching insects (finally
perching in a low bush and lodgepole pine). Obviously, it was out of its normal
range and habitat. We ruled out the “very worn” adult Sage Thrasher as described
in Sibley. The triangular spots of the Bendire’s Thrasher were obvious along
with the slight down-curved bill....Mirror Lake Highway 150 (approximately 35
miles south of Evanston), to road 032 (Whitney Reservoir), proceed 2.4 miles to
the Mill City Creek turnoff (road 109), proceed 1 ˝ miles along this road. The
road is passable by a 4-wheel drive or high clearance vehicle.
 Jun 2004 Lu Giddings (3 June 2004) - At about 11:45 a.m. today Dennis Shirley and I
observed two male White-winged Crossbills keeping company with a flock of
about 20 red crossbills. The birds were observed in the basin between miles 28
and 29 on the Mirror Lake highway. We had very good looks at both birds in
excellent light, especially on one occasion as they perched beside each other in
the top of a nearby conifer. The white wing bars were obvious and clearly seen
on each bird, and on more than one occasion. Jan 2004 Sandy Mitchell (17 Jan 2004) - ...Last weekend I went skiing up the road to
Henry's Fork campground. At "the narrows" we saw a White-tailed Ptarmigan
about 15 feet off the road all by itself. (Wish I had had my camera!) At the
campground we saw a pair of red cross-bills and, of course, gray jays... Aug 2003 Tim Gorman (10 Sept 2003) - Just got back from my annual hike up the Henry's
Fork to the King's Peak area in the Uinta Mountains in search of White-tailed
Ptarmigan. 26 Ptarmigan were seen in three days. The flock looks as good as
last year (23 were seen). Approximately half of the birds appeared to be young
of the year. The birds are about 50% white.... Also a small flock of beautiful
Townsend's Warblers were seen on the trail 3 1/2 miles from the Henry's Fork
trailhead. Some other birds of note from the hike: Northern Goshawk,
Semipalmated Plover, Three-toed Woodpecker, and Black Rosy-Finch July 2003 Alton Thygerson - July 29, 2003  This morning at 6:15 a.m. three Gray
Jays were seen at the entrance into the Lily Lake Campground on Highway 150
(Mirror Lake area). Following Dana Green's directions (thank you Dana), I walked
into the campground (gate was closed because they are resurfacing the road),
stood within 40 yards of the first restrooms/latrine on the left side of the
road, did my imitation of a Pygmy Owl, and within a couple of minutes the jays
came in. June 2003 Lee Shirley - (12 June 2003) At 12:05 p.m. today while sitting in the car,
reading, waiting for the rain to stop a Varied Thrush flew in front of
the car and landed along the side of the road. This was on the Mirror Lake
Highway between Lilly Lake and Lost Lake. Jack - (7 June 2003) I took a drive up to Provo River Falls to see if the
Williamson's Sapsuckers were there... but nothing. ...Went back to Washington
Lake area and scared up a brown colored thrush. Sat on a log to see if it would
come back. While waiting I saw numerous yellow-rumped warblers, breeding colored
juncos with rufous crowns, cassin's finches, male and female pine grosbeaks and
a female Williamson's Sapsucker. September 2002 Kelley Holtman - (Thu, 26 Sep 2002) I have a male Blue Grouse in my
backyard! This is a lifer for me; one that I have taken hikes looking for. I
have taken a few photos and my husband is here to witness as well. He did a
little display in the backyard fanning his tail, ruffling his feathers so we
could see his reddish air sacs and walking around in a circle. Letitia Lussier - (Sun, 1 Sep 2002)  It is always worth sharing the
excitement of a new yard bird . An adult Catbird and a juvenile (who was chasing
the adult around) were around for several days. I do believe this is the results
of migration and not a locally nesting bird though I could be wrong. August 2002 Dick O'Brien - (Fri, 2 Aug 2002)  Enjoyed some good
birding at the Beaver Creek Picnic area on the Mirror Lake Highway this Friday
morning. Many Western Wood Pewees and Willow Flycatchers, plus an Olive-Sided
Flycatcher. Also a pair of Belted Kingfishers, a House Wren, numerous
Black-headed Grosbeaks, a Ruffled Grouse, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, and
the usual Northern Flickers, Black-capped Chicadees, Juncos and Robins, plus a
variety of sparrows that I always need my wife's experience to identify. Letitia Lussier - (Thu, 1 Aug 2002)  While at home on Sunday, I noticed
an unusual bird at a feeder which is outside the kitchen window. When I got closer to try and figure out what it was, I was
absolutely amazed. It was a 1st year Red Crossbill! I've never had this
type of bird at a feeder before.
June 2002 Jack Binch - (Sat, 8 Jun 2002) The
Williamson's Sapsuckers are back at the tree above the Provo river falls.
April 2001 Two female THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were seen along the
trail to Island Lake on Monday, 09/03 (LP). The Island Lake Trail starts at

Canyon, just east of Summit Park, on Saturday, 09/23 (LL). A TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was seen at Little Lyman Lake
along the North Slope Road in the Uintas on Saturday, 09/02 (DW). A POMARINE JAEGER was seen and photographed at Little
Lyman Lake in the Uinta Mountains on Saturday, 08/26 (KF). The bird was an
adult, light-phase individual, was very tame, and may have been feeding on
numerous small, dead trout along the shore. Little Lyman Lake is located along
the North Slope Road, about 15 miles east of SR 150. This is the second record
of Pomarine Jaeger in Utah. July 2000 A BLACK SWIFT was seen flying over the Provo River Falls area on
Friday, 07/28 in the afternoon (MS,HW). Two COMMON LOONS, one in breeding plumage, were seen near the dam at
Echo Reservoir on Tuesday, 07/25 (DW). A pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS continues to nest along the Provo River,
about 400 yards upstream from the Provo River Falls, as of Thursday, 07/06. A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was also seen in the same area on that day(FD,LO,BW).

A male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER was seen in the trees at the east end of the
Butterfly Lake CG on Sunday, 07/09 (MS,m.obs.).

on Saturday, 06/17 (JM). The nest is in a dead tree near the river's edge just
upstream from the falls. Follow a trail along the river upstream until you pass
three trees fallen across the river. The nest is near the third fallen tree.
Please watch the nest from a distance, to avoid disturbing the birds. The Provo
River Falls are located along SR 150 noretheast of Kamas. May 2000 A LARK BUNTING was seen in the Snyderville Basin near
Park City on Tuesday, 05/16 (LL). To get to where the bird was seen, take the
north-side frontage road east from Kimball Junction until the pavement ends,
and continue for about one mile further. Please respect private property in
this area. Spring arrivals in Summit County included BROAD-TAILED
HUMMINGBIRDS at Summit Park on Wednesday, 04/26 (LL), and at Hidden Cove
(near Jeremy Ranch) on Friday, 04/28 (D&JP). LAZULI BUNTINGS were
also reported fromHidden Cove on Thursday, 04/27 (D&JP).
March 2000 Two OSPREY were seen near Echo Reservoir on Monday, 03/27. One was
on the east shore of the reservoir, and the other was just south of Coalville.
Three COMMON LOONS were also on the reservoir on that day (BW). October 1999 On Monday, 10/25, a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen at the Trail Lake Campground
along the Mirror Lake Highway, and three PINE GROSBEAKS were seen at the Mirror
Lake Campground (CGe,MSm). July 1999 At the Lost Creek Campground, along the Mirror Lake Highway, a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER
was seen on Thursday, 07/01 (AT), and again on Saturday, 07/03 (MS,DW). It was seen near
campsites 6 and 7. Other birds in the campground were GRAY JAYS on 07/01 (AT), and
a pair of PINE GROSBEAKS on 07/03 (MS,DW). The pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS nesting along the Mirror Lake Highway were
seen again feeding young in the nest on Saturday, 07/03 (MS,DW). The nest is on the west
side of the road 1/2 mile past the Provo River Falls viewpoint. Four GRAY JAYS were seen at the trailhead parking area for the Highline Trail
along the Mirror Lake Highway on Thursday, 07/15 (R&SC,MS). At the Lost Creek Campground, also along the Mirror Lake Highway, three RED
CROSSBILLS were seen at campsite number 6 on Thursday, 07/15 (R&SC,MS).
A pair of RED CROSBILLS was seen at campsite number 28 at the Mirror Lake
Campground on Friday, 07/09 (JC,MS). The pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS nesting along the Mirror Lake Highway were
seen again feeding young in the nest on Friday, 07/09 (JC,MS), and the female only was
