Nov 2017

Weston Smith (11 Nov 2017) - [East Canyon Reservoir] - White-winged Scoter. Bird was swimming by itself in the middle of the reservoir arm that goes east towards Henefer with highway 65 on north side & highway 66 on south side. I watched bird for nearly 15 minutes before it showed the white on its wings. On the 8th there was a single scoter in this same area sleeping, I watched for quite a while to see wings but gave up after about 30 minutes. So this bird may have been around for a few days.
-- Also seen: Red-necked Grebe. Single medium sized grebe actively diving at the south end of the reservoir out from the big rock that the campground down there is named after. No other birds in area for comparison but was able to get decent pictures that show enough details for a confirmation.

This was about a mile from any shore did the best to get some pictures not great but can identify all of them.

Glad a couple birders decided to come forward after learning this bird had possibly been present weeks, and that several local birders were trying to place a gag order on it. First chase-able GGOW in Utah in 28 years, maybe really ever given the locations, and ability to share information in 1989. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime sighting for most Utah Birders.

Pomera Fronce (3 Feb 2017) - [Mountain Green, UT] - Red-naped Sapsucker. We were driving through the residential areas looking for the GGOW when a bird nearly hit the windshield and then landed low on a small tree. Excellent eye level looks for five minutes.

Weston Smith
(1 Feb 2017) - [Stoddard, UT] - Horned Lark. 250. This is an estimate definitely on the low side, I didn't count. I was more focused on finding a rare bird in the flock, without success. Usually only see small flocks of around a dozen or two in Morgan County there just isn't the habitat that bring large numbers. I'm guessing this is do to the extreme amount of snow Northern Utah is getting this winter. These birds are doing just like other animals in the area, congregating in large numbers wherever food is available.

Dec 2016

Weston Smith (27 December 2016) - [East Canyon Reservoir] - American Tree Sparrow

Weston Smith (20 December 2016) - [Milton, UT] - Ross's Goose. Very small white goose with black wing tips, nice round head with small stubby red orange bill. Bird was with a bunch of Canada Geese on the Weber River. I tried getting some pictures but was only able to get some very distant ones that have been heavily cropped. The pictures show the size comparison to the Canada Geese as well as the round head and its small bill that is almost not visible. The birds all flushed when I was still more than a hundred yards from them. I was able to see a good size difference in the wing span of this bird compared to the Canadas as they all flew away from me.

Weston Smith (3 November 2016) - [East Canyon Reservoir] - Pacific Loon. Continuing bird though today it seems to have swallowed something with fishing line and is tangled in it. The bird seems to have item in area where throat starts causing bill to remain open slightly, line goes around one wing and tight enough to keep head back towards wing. Bird seems to be moving across water ok but not sure if it can dive. It was vigorously rolling in the water in an attempt to free itself. Last I saw it was about the center of the reservoir. I contacted everyone I could think to maybe get it some help today if not I have a contact that can possibly help tomorrow.

Bryant Olsen (24 September 2016) - [East Canyon Reservoir] - Osprey, Golden Eagle, Great Horned Owl, Red-naped Sapsucker

Weston Smith (16 September 2016) - [Lost Creek - Croydon, UT] - Northern Goshawk. Immature bird hanging out for a half hour or so licking chops as if waiting for the chicken coop doors to open. Left just before the auto doors opened thank goodness or I'd have some explaining to do when son got home for not protecting his chickens.

Weston Smith (12 September 2016) - [Lost Creek - Croydon, UT] - Common Tern. There were six terns flying around the reservoir this morning made up of two groups, a group of two large terns definitely Caspian and a group of four small terns. When I viewed the first one with optics I determined it to be a non breeding plumage Forster's Tern. I then decided to try taking some pictures of them since this was the first time I remember seeing Forester's Terns in Morgan County since I started to keep records in 2001. I was able to get a couple okay pictures of the last two of the small terns before they got too far away. Upon uploading the pictures on my computer I noticed the last tern looks to be a Common not a Forster's. I did not notice this in the field as I only used my binoculars on the first bird then grabbed camera and just snapped a few photos. From all the books and pictures, I could find this bird looks to be a Common due to the dark on the front middle of wings. I was a bit thrown off by the bill color but have found the juvenile Common have orange bill.

It was with about 10 Western Grebes near the area the Red-necked Grebe was seen last year. The bird then started moving north by itself staying towards the west side of the reservoir. When I left it was still by itself but was almost to the center of the reservoir... The two Long-tailed Ducks continue and were on the north side in a cove between the east arm that goes towards Henefer and the marina. There was one drake Barrow's Goldeneye at the south end of the reservoir... Also the Sandhill Crane continues in the field here in Croydon.

Bryan Shirley (21 Apr 2014) - Just finished up our field trip to Morgan and Summit Counties. The Sage Grouse put on a pretty good show this morning. I counted at least 29 males displaying and 1 female as well. They were split into 2 groups - one right in and along the road and the other out in the field. There [were] Vesper Sparrows singing at the grouse lek as well. East Canyon had a good number of Common Loons and a few Western and Common Grebes. There was a male Wood Duck right where the creek comes into East Canyon. Here is our list for the day: [hightlights] ... Greater Sage Grouse, Common Loon, Western Grebe, Clark's Grebe, Am White Pelican,... Osprey, ... Sandhill Crane...Caspian Tern..., Great Horned Owl... Mountain Bluebird...Vesper Sparrow...Fox Sparrow...

Feb 2014

Dave Hanscom (28 Feb 2014) - A friend and I were planning to meet in Eden to go skiing in North Fork Park in the Ogden Valley. After reading Brian Maxfield's report of Sage Grouse in the Uinta Basin, I decided to stop on my way and see if there was any activity at the Henefer lek. I arrived there with the sun at 7:30, so the strutting was over, but several males were hanging out in the sage. One was even kind enough to be on the Summit County side of the line. :-)

Edson Leite (18 Feb 2014) - went up to Echo, Utah today at 10:30AM. The pair of Bald Eagles were on the nest moving sticks and clumps of grassy material around the nest.

Dave Hanscom (14 Feb 2014) - I drove up the road from Henefer to East Canyon on Sunday in search of winter birds. No Snow Buntings or Larkspurs, but a Northern Shrike, which was nice.

Jan 2014

Weston Smith (6 Jan 2014) - There were lots of waterfowl on a small patch of open water on East Canyon Reservoir about noon today. The waterfowl included lots of Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers and American Coots. Also there was two Ruddy Ducks and one each of the following Mallard, LONG-TAILED DUCK, Ring-necked Duck, Eared Grebe, and Pied-billed Grebe. If heading to East Canyon remember that the road over Big Mountain is closed for the winter.

Nov 2013

Weston Smith (25 Nov 2013)- There is a Long-tailed Duck on East Canyon Reservoir. It was with about a dozen Common Goldeneyes and a male Bufflehead over near the marina. Also there was a male Hooded Merganser near the South end of the lake and a male Barrow's Goldeneye with a large group of Common Goldeneye in the middle of the lake.

Weston Smith
(12 Nov 2013) - The Red-necked Grebe was still on East Canyon in the same area as reported earlier. I also saw one drake Barrow's Goldeneye with a couple hens. I was able to find one Pacific Loon in the nearly two dozen Common Loons that are still on the reservoir.

Oct 2013

Dave Hanscom (16 Oct 2013) - Stopped by East Canyon Reservoir today in search of a Pacific Loon. Lots of Common Loons, but no Pacific was to be found. Bonus was two SURF SCOTERS near the south end of the lake, not far from the inlet.

Jul 2013

Weston Smith (16 Jul 2013) - There was a male Rufous Hummingbird at our feeders in Croydon this morning.

May 2013

Weston Smith (25 May 2013) - [Croyden] - There was an Indigo Bunting singing in our back yard last night in Croydon, Utah. This was at about 7:30PM as I was filling the feeders.

Weston Smith (14 May 2013) - The Bobolinks are back in the fields around Henefer. We were able to see four different males, which seem to be setting up territory over a field Southwest of the Henefer Sewer Lagoons. You will need a spotting scope if going to look for them as they were about a mile from any road. Also saw an adult Bald Eagle soaring over the Weber River in Henefer.

Apr 2013

Dave Hanscom (25 Apr 2013) - Stopped at Rockport on the way home. The white geese were gone, but a small flock of Marbled Godwits were hanging out on the shore by the highway. Didn't see any Bonaparte's this time, but several Franklin's Gulls. Still lots of Common Loons.

Mar 2013

Weston Smith (31 Mar 2013) - I was out trying out a scope tonight when a fast moving object came into view. ... I could see that the bird now struggling to fly was indeed a falcon and a Peregrine with a large light colored bird about half its size. ... I was able to get a picture before it flew off and believe it had a Eurasian Collared-Dove. This is only the third time I have seen a Peregrine in Croydon since moving here in 2004 the second time was just over a week ago.

Weston Smith (17 Mar 2013) - Guess I spoke to soon yesterday about the redpolls. The weather changed last night and today there was one Common Redpoll out here at the feeders. Yesterday [Mar 16]  we saw Western Meadowlarks, Tree Swallows, Gulls (to high to id), and a Say's Pheobe. Today we had Cassin's Finches, Lesser Goldfinches, and a Turkey Vulture. Also saw hundreds of Sandhill Cranes headed north a couple days ago.

Weston Smith (1 Mar 2013) - The two TRUMPETER SWANS are still here in Croydon. I last saw them land in a field about a mile North of my house.

Feb 2013

Weston Smith (28 Feb 2013) - There were two TRUMPETER SWANS in Croydon yesterday at about 10am.

Bryan Shirley (2 Feb 2013) - [Croyden] - Today on the Utah County Birders Field Trip 5 birders headed North to Farmington Bay. ... Stopped at Croyden for Redpolls.  We watched the feeders for about an hour or so and had small groups of Common Redpolls, but no Hoary (others had seen at least one earlier in the day).  Thanks again Weston for reporting them and letting us visit.

Jan 2013

Weston Smith (30 Jan 2013) - [Croyden] - The HOARY REDPOLL is back or its another one, first seen at about 9:30am. I have been searching for over a month since the Hoary was first seen here. Finally I found a redpoll that matches all the field marks in my books and on the internet. ... Also I have counted as many as 42 Common Redpolls at one time. The Redpolls seem to be here more in the morning than afternoon but I see them all hours of the day unless one of the two Sharp-shinned Hawks comes for a meal.

Paul Higgins (20 Jan 2013) - Sharp-shinned Hawk, Croydon, Morgan County, Utah

Nov 2012

Paul Higgins (15 Dec 2012) - COMMON REDPOLL and an American Tree Sparrow - Croydon, Morgan County, Utah

Alton Thygerson (7 Dec 2012) - A single Common Redpoll was seen at Weston Smith's home near Croydon  at about noon.

Nov 2012

Weston Smith (12 Nov 2012) - There is a Common Redpoll at my feeder in Croydon, UT.

Oct 2012

Bryant Olsen (30 Oct 2012) - This afternoon I found 2 immature/female SURF SCOTERS at East Canyon reservoir. They we near the south end by a large group of Ruddy Ducks. Also at least 20 COMMON LOONS... There were 6 HOODED MERGANSERS on the south end too.

Weston Smith (21 Oct 2012) -  Saw three Tundra Swans at the Henefer Sewer Lagoons, one had a large amount of yellow on the bill.

Kimberly Roush (14 Oct 2012) - Scott and I found a pair of Wood Ducks on the south end of East Canyon Reservoir today @ noon.

Weston Smith (12 Oct 2012) - [Croyden, UT] - Had a male Common Grackle at the feeder this morning. I think it is getting late for them.

Bryant Olsen (9 Oct 2012) - This afternoon I found the PACIFIC LOON that Norm reported on eBird at East Canyon Reservoir. It was mixed in with 6 COMMON LOONS near where the south and east bays of the lake join, way out in the middle of the lake. ... Later near Little Mt. Pass, I saw a couple RUFFED GROUSE, but there were very few passerines anywhere, winter must be coming.

Sep 2012

Norm Jenson (24 Sep 2012) - Looking for a Golden-crowned Sparrow Gail and I found a small flock 5 or 6 birds of Evening Grosbeaks.

David Wheeler (24 Sep 2012) - Today I saw a lovely fall-plumaged Rusty blackbird at the Smith household in Croyden (east of Morgan) at the same house where the Golden-crowned sparrow was reported last week. It is strikingly patterned with a very bright nape and eyebrow, plus orange/golden speckling on its back. The belly is bluish-gray banded black.

Weston Smith (18 Sep 2012) - The sparrows this fall are coming a lot like 2007 when we had an im. Golden-crowned Sparrow here as well. I have been scanning them for days now and have found one bird that fits. Also my father (Arnold Smith) saw it today. This is an immature bird and stands out from the many im. WC due to having a dark bill, bright yellow spot on forhead (like its wearing a headlamp), dark chocolate colored stripes on head, and overall darker appearance than the WC it is around. Also it is more aggressive, does not like other birds within several feet while it is feeding. This is in Croydon, Utah (Morgan County)...

May 2012

Weston Smith (30May 2012) - [Croyden] - There is a Black-throated Sparrow feeding on weed seeds in my driveway here in Croydon, Utah .... The bird was first seen at 5:45pm. Also there has been a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at a feeder in Morgan City for a couple days now.

D Fullmer (21 May 2012) - While fishing yesterday, (Sunday, May 20), I observed what I am pretty sure are Red Breasted Mergansers showing nesting behavior in the cliffs above Lost Creek Reservoir...

Weston Smith (13 May 2012) - There has been a male Rufous Hummingbird at my parents' (Arnold Smith) house in Morgan City (Morgan County, Utah) for the past couple days.

Weston Smith (6 May 2012)- My parents just had an Indigo Bunting at their feeder in Morgan, Utah.

Weston Smith (6 May 2012) - [Croydon] - We just had a Burrowing Owl in our yard(1375N 6800E Croydon, UT) as well as a male Common Grackle. The owl was continuously harassed by about 30 Tree Swallows until it disappeared into the sage brush in the back yard.

Apr 2012

K Langford (18Apr 2012) - I was fishing up above Morgan at East Canyon Res. on Sunday, April 15, 2012. I saw a pair of Common Loons. I thought I recognized them as loons but as soon as they began vocalizing in the evening I knew for sure. I think I will drive up that way again.

Mar 2012

Cindy Sommerfeld (30 Aug 2012) - This morning Steve and I got up early to get to the GREATER SAGE-GROUSE lek above Henefer. The grouse were there and displaying beautifully.  We continued up the road to East Canyon reservoir, where we found a few COMMON LOONS. Then back through Henefer to Croydon. In Croydon we found a flock (more like a herd) of 90 WILD TURKEYS. It was fun to watch the Toms strut their stuff. To get back on the freeway we passed the cement plant and crossed a bridge over the Weber River, Steve spotted a AM. DIPPER flying next to us. We stopped and scanned the river. There on a small rock in the river was the Dipper singing his heart out. It was the first time I'd ever heard a Dipper sing. What a melodic song. He continued to sing in spite of the trains passing over him and the cement trucks passing next to him. What an optimist! It made my day.

Bryant Olsen (20 Mar 2012) - This morning, it being the Spring Equinox, I decided what better way to start the day other than going to the Sage Grouse lek at Henefer...I pulled over and turned off my car and rolled down the window to listen for the bubbling sound of sage grouse. I didn't hear that, but I did hear the distant hooting of a couple GREAT HORNED OWLS, not a bad first bird of the day. A minute or two after that, I heard the sound of wind rushing through wings from overhead, and in the faint light saw about a dozen GREATER SAGE GROUSE come in from the south and land out on the lek about 50 yards north of the road. Within a few minutes, I could here that bubbling sound of strutting grouse. As the light grew, more birds showed up, and my high count, just before dawn, was 31 strutting cocks, and at least 3 hens.

Nov 2011

Bryant Olsen (14 Nov 1022) - Today around noon I found a smallish loon (possible RED-THROATED LOON) with a very pale face, white above the eye, at East Canyon reservoir. It was WAY out there in the middle of the res. toward the south end. At one point a COMMON LOON was swimming near it, and it really looked small and pale in comparison. Other species seen: Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Red-throated Loon, Western Grebe, Clark's Grebe, Bald Eagle, Larus sp., Black-billed Magpie, Black-capped Chickadee

Paul Higgins (14 Nov 2011) - Golden-crowned Sparrow, 1900 West Gentile Street, Syracuse, Utah. The bird’s location is on the north side of West Gentile Road, 1/10 mile east of the intersection with 2000W. The bird is with a flock of American Tree Sparrows. Paul will be posting images later.

Oct 2011

Joel Beyer (23 Oct 2011) - The Pacific Loon was at East Canyon Reservoir this morning, in company with several Common Loons in the north inlet (near the buoy line).

Sep 2011

Jeff Cooper (9 Sep 2011) - I received a text from a birding friend this morning as he was passing through the mountains east of Coalville on his way to Wyoming. He said he saw large, mixed flocks of warblers and other birds so we have one more data point for where the migrants seem to be, in the mountains, for what it's worth. He indicated one group had probably 25 Townsend's Warblers.

May 2011

Weston Smith (26 May 2011) - I just had a female Lark Bunting in the driveway here in Croydon, Utah. It was feeding with several Lark Sparrows.

Apr 2011

Keeli Marvel (25 April 2011) - Three Utah County Birders met in the wee hours of the morning
Saturday, April 23rd for a field trip to the Henefer Greater Sage-grouse Lek... After spending about an hour watching the grouse, we were treated to the sight of a PEREGRINE FALCON chasing a smaller bird (possibly a robin) directly over the parking area...  --After visiting the lek, we wandered on down to East Canyon Reservoir. Highlights were a VESPER SPARROW on the fence perched on the fence about halfway between the lek and the reservoir, COMMON LOONS, COMMON MERGANSERS, and WESTERN GREBES on the reservoir, a SPOTTED TOWHEE across from the entrance to the RV park and a FOX SPARROW in the brushy marshy area on the east side of the road past the resort....

Douglas Mead (11 April 2011) - Notwithstanding I had to get up at 4:30 to make a rendezvous with the GSLAS group, it was a fantastic day. Roberta Wherritt led 5 of us to the Henefer Sage Grouse lek and when we crested the last hill before the reservoir the birds were all over the middle of the road--and I do mean all over. We counted 104;... Other highlights included Common Mergansers, Common Loons, 20 Turkeys--the toms were really gussied up too, many Sandhill Cranes, Savannah Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, 2 Ospreys, 13 Great Blue Herons in a rookery at Henefer and a Golden Eagle. ...

Jon Watkins (9 Apr 2011) - Flock of ~50 Franklin's Gulls in field just before Hwy 65 T's into Henefer, with a larger flock of Ring-billed Gulls.  Pinkish hues showing off beautifully.

Mar 2011

David Wheeler (25 Mar 2011) - GREATER SAGE GROUSE above Henefer at lek. Big activity. The spot continues to amaze.

Weston Smith
(22 Mar 2011) - There is a Black Rosy-finch at my feeders here in Croydon, UT eating sunflower seed.

zippymahatma
(13 Mar 2011) - Approximately fifty Greater Sage-Grouse were on hand at first light this morning at the usual place along State Road 65 (at the county line) coming out of Henefer headed for East Canyon. Mostly males with only a few females. There were Wild Turkeys on State Road 66 just as you came out of the canyon and began seeing small homesteads on the way to Morgan. Just past the turkeys were a pair of Lewis' Woodpeckers on telephone poles.

Tim Gorman (6 Mar 2011) - The Great Blue Herons are starting to congregate in and around the Henefer heron rookery along the Weber River. Some blue herons are on the nests "staking claim". The heron rookery is on the Weber River along I84 between Henefer and Echo. A few Bald Eagles are hanging out amongst the herons, as always. No immature Bald Eagles were noted.

Dec 2010

Kristen Purdy (29 Dec 2010) - Wasatch Audubon performed the Morgan CBC today in Morgan County. Jack Rensel, Sharon Perry and I recorded seven GRAY PARTRIDGE on W. Deep Creek
Road in Morgan. We flushed them from under sagebrush on an embankment above the road without knowing they were there previously.

Nov 2010

Matt Schamberger (6 Nov 2010) - My wife and I saw nine Lewis' Woodpeckers today on the drive from East Canyon Reservoir to Morgan. (Sadly we did not locate the Red-throated loon at East Canyon.) We saw the first Lewis' near mile marker six and watched it for approximately 15 min. We saw the last two not far from Steph's Drive-In in Morgan, UT.

Cindy Sommerfeld (6 Nov 2010) - Steve and I decided to do a reservoir loop today.  The Pacific Loon is still at East Canyon Reservoir.  It was closer to the dam than when it was first reported.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (2 Nov 2010) - Sunday, at least 7 Lewis' Woodpeckers were seen along Highway 66, which runs from Morgan to East Canyon Reservoir.  Specifically, they were seen between mile markers 5.5 and 7.2.   Four woodpeckers were hanging about Woods Creek (mm 7.2), and the others were seen individually.

Oct 2010

Jeff Bilsky (22 Oct 2010) - Birded East Canyon Red last night with Steve and Cindy and we relocated what certainly seems to be a PACIFIC LOON. It was on the south shore, not quite all the way to the east side of the res, but past the pullout with the restrooms. It's an interesting bird, very dark, kinda messy, small, seems to have some of the grayish tinges of breeding plumage in the neck. Also we had a NORTHERN SHRIKE tee-up for a nice look in the same general area. Good Birding...

Weston Smith (7 Oct 2010) - [Broad-winged Hawk] Wife and I seen bird soaring over our house in Croydon (Morgan County) at about 4:20pm.  It came from Henefer (Summit County) and was last seen headed west towards Morgan City at about 4:25pm.

Jun 2010

Weston Smith (27 June 2010) - Just had a male Rufous Hummingbird at my feeder in Croydon (Morgan County). My father had a male at his feeders in Morgan two or three days ago.

May 2010

Ned Bixler (2 May 2010) - Sat. May 1st - Thanks to Reed and Kay Stone, we were able to visit the Henefer Lek, and see approx. 24+ Sage Grouses.

Apr 2010

Kristin Purdy (12 April 2010) - (East Canyon] Most of the characteristics of today's sapsucker favored the Red-naped Sapsucker...

Joel and Kathy Beyer (11 April 2010) - After looking at a supposed Red-naped Sapsucker (it had a red nape) with Jeff and his group, we searched through every tree and bush within sight of the restrooms. ... The bird did have a dull red patch on the nape, but the books say this does rarely occur. So presumably this was the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Now we'll let the experts thrash it out.

I should've mentioned our fowl: Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards, Cinnamon Teal, and Common Mergansers. We didn't catch a Loon but heard at least one was around.

Bill Fennimore (9 April 2010) - While leading a "Partners In Flight" field trip today we saw a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker [most likely an unusual Red-naped Sapsucker].  He was at the East Canyon State Park, near the boat launch.  We got to see both our target birds:  Greater Sage-Grouse and Rosy Finch, Black and Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch too.

Bryant Olson
(4 April 2010) - I went to the GREATER SAGE GROUSE lek near Henefer this morning, despite the fresh snow and treacherous roads. ... Then I headed to Croydon, and saw more WILD TURKEYS than I have ever seen before, 100 or more, along the creek east of town. 6 TURKEY VULTURES were near by roosting in the trees too.

David Wheeler (3 April 2010) - ... Croyden Exit to I-84 ... the Croyden area did prove worthwhile. There was a flock of over a hundred Wild turkeys (!!) a mile or two beyond town...  Nearby was a late Merlin in a frosty tree, an unexpected bonus to the day's list.

Nov 2009

Weston Smith (24 Nov 2009) - My father(Arnold Smith) and I birded around Morgan County today between noon and dark. The most uncommon birds seen for this time of year were a female Western Tanager and a Sapsucker. The Sapsucker was most likely Red-naped, could have been a Yellow-bellied but we did not get a very good look at it, since it had red on top of its head and chin with a lot of yellow on the belly...

Oct 2009

Dave Hanscom (30 Oct 2009) - Just got back from a trip to the reservoir to check for loons... The closer I got to the dam, the more loons there were. After spending more than an hour poring through them all, I finally got to the north arm of the reservoir, and there was the Pacific Loon I'd been hoping for...

Sep 2009

Weston Smith (2 Sep 2009) - I had a White-winged Dove stop by the backyard here in Croydon (Morgan County) about 7pm tonight. It stayed for about 10 minutes then flew off with the resident Collard-doves.

Jul 2009

Weston Smith (13 Jul 2009) - My father (Arnold Smith) called last night to say that a White-winged Dove was at his feeder in Morgan. We are wondering if it is the same one that came a year or so ago, it seemed to know right were the feeder was located.

Mar 2009

Weston Smith (30 Mar 2009) - Went birding today with my dad(Arnold Smith), brother(Aaron), and his daughter in Morgan County. We decided to see if we could find any White-winged Crossbills in the county since they have been reported all around Morgan. Our trip was very successful as we found nine White-winged about a half mile from dads house, maybe they will find his feeders or spruce trees.

Nov 2008

Joel and Kathy Beyer (30 Nov 2008) - A few birds of note from today's outing... East Canyon Reservoir (Morgan Co.): Pacific Loon (winter plumage), Barrow's Goldeneyes, Hooded Mergansers - Morgan (Woods Creek Road - 4186 So. Hwy 66): Lewis' Woodpecker (2).

Oct 2008

Jack Binch (19 Oct 2008) - Bob Huntington and I decided to bird the East Canyon Reservoir area. There are 40+ Common Loons and one very easy to identify Pacific Loon. It has a very light gray head and neck, and of course the smaller size, and smaller bill.

Sep 2008

Weston Smith (27 Sep 2008) - Just thought I would pass on the birds I saw while in search of deer from 9/24 to 9/26. I was on the Wasatch Mountains north of Francis Peak on the Morgan County side. The best birds I saw were two White-breasted Nuthatches, a Townsend's Warbler, a Hammond's Flycatcher, and a Broad-winged Hawk.

Jun 2008

Tim Avery (9 Jun 20008) - Late yesterday afternoon, I was dragged out of my house and ended up in the upper portion of East Canyon above East Canyon Resort. I birded along the river that flows along the dirt road that heads south (to the left), right before the pavement turns west and heads up towards Big Mountain Pass from East Canyon. And vice versa from Big Mountain Pass heading towards East Canyon Reservoir, the dirt road heads south (to the right) as the road bends to the north towards the reservoir. It was birding that typified montane summer birding in Utah at its finest! However, the highlight was not the many mountain birds twittering through the tops of the cottonwoods, along the creek in the willows or across the hillsides in the oak... No, the highlight was a BEEE-autiful male Tennessee Warbler singing up a storm just to the south of the bridge over the river that leads onto private property, less than a 100 yards down the dirt road from the main paved road. When I heard the bird singing I thought, oh great, another Orange-crowned Warbler tyrign to confuse me (I hear 3 or 4 each year that sing notes that sound very similar to a TEWA). However, the bird kept singing and when I found it, I was pleasantly surprised to see a clean gray and white bird, with a greenish back and white undertail.   This has to be a rather late date for this species, but judging how migration has been iffy and a bit on the late side this year, I'm not all that surprised....Location: East Canyon, Morgan Co. ...Calliope Hummingbird 1 (male perched on top of a willow along the creek)...

Nov 2007

Weston Smith (22 Nov 2007) - the White-winged Dove is still coming into our fathers (Arnold Smith) feeder in Morgan Utah.

Joel and Kathy (12 Nov 2007) - The Red-throated Loon previously reported at East Canyon Reservoir was still present as of noon today. Several Common Loons were also there, but no Pacific Loons were seen.

Edson Leite (10 Nov 2007) - Beth and I tried to chase a few of the birds seen in northern Utah lately...we headed to East Canyon Reservoir... Pacific Loon (1)... Northern Shrike (1) at Park Entrance...

Tim Avery (8 Nov 2007) - This afternoon I made a quick trip... to East Canyon Reservoir to check out the loons. ... I spotted a "small" loon near the dam, so I drove around, finding a juvenile Pacific Loon swimming near a couple Western Grebes. I spent about 20 minutes watching this bird before heading back around the lake, and after turning back onto 65 south/west I pulled out where the lake splits to the east and south. From here I could see about 14 loons on the water, including a group of 2 Pacific Loons with a Common Loon. I could not age them at the distance and in the failing light. About this time a loon popped up in the east arm, directly north from where I was, even at 200 yards, the unique pattern of a Red-throated Loon in basic plumage was evident. ...Being able to see RTLO, PALO, and COLO all within 200 yards of one another was a "neat".

Kris Purdy (4 Nov 2007) - Arnold Smith saw a White-winged Dove in his yard in Morgan, Morgan County, late this afternoon. The bird was feeding on birdseed in the chicken's yard; when Arnold went outside to put the chickens in their yard for the night, the dove flushed. The city of Morgan hosts good numbers of Eurasian Collared-doves on the west side of town west of Main Street/SR-66. Perhaps the White-winged Dove will join that flock, so be on the lookout if you pass through town.

Oct 2007

Weston Smith (21 Oct 2007) - We had an adult winter Harris Sparrow at our feeder here in Croydon Utah this morning the 21st about 9am. All the birds flushed about an hour ago and I have not seen it since. Hopefully it will come back so I can try taking a picture of it.

Weston Smith (16 Oct 2007) - The Rose-breasted Grosbeak was seen at our feeders here in Croydon, UT on Sunday(9/14) morning from about 9am to noon when I left for work. The bird looked to be a 1st winter male as shown in the Sibley guide but had the streaking across the entire breast, also seemed to be brighter than any Black-headed that I have ever seen. I was able to get a few "didgy scope" (digital camera shots through a scope) pictures of it but am not computer savvy enough to get them on here.

Kristin Purdy (7 Oct 2007) - I birded several reservoirs--East Canyon, Rockport, and Echo--along the Wasatch Back in Morgan and Summit Counties today. The highlights: Surprise Cassin's and Warbling Vireos (one of each) in the spruce trees in front of the restaurant at East Canyon Resort....

Sep 2007

Weston Smith (26 Sep 2007) - Here is an update on the rare birds in Croydon, Utah. I am still seeing the Golden-crowned Sparrow, when I have the time to sit down and look( last seen on the 25th). Also the White-winged Dove showed back up on Monday(9/24) and was here all day yesterday the 25th. It looks like it went through a hurricane, it now has more white showing on its wings and the wings are longer than the tail do to the molting. While watching it come in for a landing yesterday I witnessed one of its primary wing feathers brake loose and fluttered to the ground.

Weston Smith (11 Sep 2007) - Today, 09/11/07, at roughly 1430 and again at 1530 a 1st year juvenile Golden-crowned Sparrow was viewed by Weston, Aaron and Arnold Smith at Weston's home in Croydon, Utah.

Weston Smith (5 Sep 2007) - Just like to let you all know about a couple odd birds we have had in our backyard here in Croydon, Utah(Morgan County) in the last couple of days. First on Monday(9/3) after noon there was a juvinile White-winged Dove feeding with four Eurasin Collared Doves below our feeders. And the second was a Bewick's Wren foraging in our wood pile this morning(9/5). After talking with my father (Arnold Smith) I believe these are both firsts for Morgan County.

May 2007

Weston Smith (14 May 2007) - I live in Croydon, Ut(Morgan county) about 200 yards from Summit county and had two Eurasian Collared-Doves in my back yard last week, they flew towards Henefer.  So there are Eurasian Collared Doves in Summit county at least in Henefer.

Dec 2006

Kris Purdy (25 Dec 2006) - I saw a Blue Jay at about 4:15 this afternoon in East Canyon, Morgan County, below SR-66 at mile 3.1. The spot on the road is marked by the only power pole in East Canyon with a raptor perch that extends above the top of the pole... The Blue Jay was hanging out with a gang of 4-5 Steller's Jays. They seemed like a bunch of delinquents looking for trouble. They were filtering through the trees at the dam end of a pasture below the road.

Nov 2006

Edson Leite (5 Nov 2006) - Beth and I started the day at Arnold's house looking for the Prothonotory Warbler, we saw it around 10:20 and again at 11. We went to East Canyon reservoir after that, and saw common loons, Horned Grebe, and all three mergansers.

Kris Purdy (2 Nov 2006) - The Prothonotary Warbler party at Arnold Smith's house in Morgan, Morgan County, was well attended this morning. Guests included Pomera Fronce, Keith Evans, Jack Rensel, Paul Higgins, David and Petey Wheeler, me and most importantly, the Prothonotary Warbler.

(1 Nov 2006) - At 0945 the Prothonotary Warbler showed up in the same location at Arnold Smith's house in Morgan, Utah. This time the bird was viewed by Arnold, Weston, Linda, Shauna, Celeste and Aaron Smith for at least 20 minutes. We were able to photograph the bird before it flew into the quaking aspen trees to the Northeast of their driveway. It looks like the bird is a first year male as it is not quite as yellow as an adult breeding male. At roughly 1010 the bird then flew to the neighbor's yard to the south. The warbler is feeding on aphids in the box elder/lilac/wild rose bushes next to Arnold's mail box. Birders are welcome.

Oct 2006

(31 Oct 2006) - Today at 2:50 p.m. in the front yard of Arnold Smith's house in Morgan, Utah Arnold, Aaron and Shauna Smith sighted a male Prothonotary Warbler. We watched the bird for several minutes getting excellent looks. The bird then flew to the neighbor's house across the street to the southwest. We watched the bird for at least 10 minutes before it flew.

May 2006

Christian Peay (8 May 2006) - I got a brief but good look of a Chestnut-sided Warbler today at Como Springs in Morgan. It was in a Cottonwood tree near bridge that crosses the little stream that runs through Como Springs. It flew away and I was not able to find it again.

Mar 2006

Kristin Purdy (19 Mar 2006) - I spent some time patrolling East Canyon in Morgan County this afternoon around 1:30, around 4:00, and again after 6:00 for the purpose of finding a Northern Pygmy-Owl. I almost passed the little sucker at 6:10 pm at about mile 3.6 of SR-66. The owl looked a lot more like a brownish-tinged junco sitting at the top of a scrub oak on the downhill side of the road than it did a pygmy-owl.

Feb 2006

Christian Peay (15 Feb 2006) - This morning I observed a flock of approx. 400 Bohemian Waxwings. They were in some large trees at 200 S. Morgan Valley Dr. in Morgan County.

Kathy and Joel Beyer (12 Feb 2006) - We were treated to quite a show by one of the East Canyon (Hwy. 66, Morgan Co.) Northern Pygmy-Owls this afternoon. It was at mile marker 3.2 (or about .4 miles south of the Mortensen Ranch driveway). We also saw approx. 40 Bohemian Waxwings in Porterville (Hwy 66, Morgan Co.), and 25 Wild Turkeys on the east side of Echo Reservoir (Summit Co.)

Jan 2006

Christian Peay (17 Jan 2006) - Today at 9:50 I saw two Eurasian Collared-Doves sitting on power lines at 360 W. Young St in Morgan. This is the first time I have seen them in Morgan County.

Kristin Purdy (1 Jan 2006) - Arnold Smith and his wife Linda saw the East Canyon/Morgan County Northern Pygmy-Owl again late this afternoon. Arnold said the bird was about a mile further up in the canyon; in other words, between mm 4 and 3 on SR-66 and closer to East Canyon Reservoir. He also said the spot is further up the canyon (toward the dam) than the DWR property at Redrock Canyon. I think there's a brown sign denoting the Redrock area as East Canyon WMA. Arnold also saw the Lewis's Woodpecker again; this bird is somewhat lower between mm 4 and 5. The male Long-tailed Duck is still on the reservoir.

Dec 2005

Kris Purdy (28 Dec 2005) - Paul Higgins photographed a flock of about 100 Bohemian Waxwings today in Porterville, the small community between the town of Morgan and East Canyon in Morgan County.

Kris Purdy (23 Dec 2005) - I just got a call from Arnold Smith, who's participating in today's Morgan Christmas Count and is counting birds in his own backyard. One of the birds he just counted is a Northern Pygmy-Owl...It's unlikely this is the same bird as the one seen recently in East Canyon. As the pygmy-owl flies, the two locations are approximately 8 miles apart.

Kris Purdy (23 Dec 2005) - I got a call from Arnold Smith tonight, reporting he saw a Northern Pygmy-Owl in East Canyon in Morgan County. The bird was originally seen twice by Paul Higgins last week or the week before. Paul described the spot (and Arnold saw the bird there also) as 2.2 miles below the East Canyon Dam on SR-66...Arnold also reported seeing a Lewis's Woodpecker from the road around the curve and below the owl's location. In other words, in the direction of Porterville. There's open water still in East Canyon Reservoir, where he saw a Long-tailed Duck and Barrow's Goldeneye...

Kathy and Joel Beyer (18 Dec 2005) - A mixed flock of 100 waxwings, about 60 Bohemian Waxwings and 40 Cedar, were seen Saturday afternoon off Highway 66, just south of the town of Morgan (Morgan County). The location was near a house numbered 4073, where the highway crosses a stream flanked by many large trees...

Kristin Purdy (11 Dec 2005) - One adult male Long-tailed Duck was at East Canyon Reservoir in Morgan County today. Like Tim's adult male at the causeway, this one also appeared not to have the long tail feathers. The bird still had an all-white head except for a dark oval on the side of the neck and the pale gray elongated scapulars. The duck was swimming adjacent to mile 16.5 on SR-65. This spot is just south of the Taylor's Hollow area...  A handful of Barrow's Goldeneyes and three Hooded Mergansers were there along with beaucoup Mallards, Common Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers. I also saw a couple Pied-billed Grebes, Western Grebes and Bald Eagles.

Kristin Purdy (22 Nov 2005) - Last stop was Lost Creek State Park in Morgan County...The 12-mile drive to the park offered a few nice birds. I saw a Northern Shrike at a place that's now lost to memory...

Tim Avery (17 Nov 2005) - I ran up to East Canyon this morning to see what was kicking around. Along SR 65 right before the big pool that goes under the road, a Northern Shrike was seen crossing the road and then perching in a scrub oak. I took several pictures of the bird. On the "pool" were 3 Hooded Merganser, 1 male and 2 female. On the lake were nearly 2 dozen Barrow's Goldeneye, about as many Common Goldeneye, and just as many Common Merganser. Also on the lake was a lone Common Loon still changing into basic plumage.

Kristin Purdy (2 Nov 2005) - All three merganser species were present at East Canyon Reservoir in Morgan County today--Hooded [Merganser], Red-breasted, and Common. Six Hooded Mergansers (five males and a female) and a male Bufflehead swam in the reservoir at the south end adjacent to mile marker 16 of SR-65. ...A flotilla of 12 goldeneyes also swam in the same area. All of the adults--six males and two females--were Barrow's Goldeneyes. The remaining four were juveniles.

Oct 2005

Kristin Purdy (31 Oct 2005) - Some of you may remember reports of a Blue Jay in Mountain Green in Morgan County last winter. The homeowners say that bird has returned.

Aaron Smith (16 Oct 2005) - We (Aaron, Shauna, Arnold and Celeste Smith) saw a Pacific Loon on East Canyon State Park Reservoir at about 4:30 p.m. swimming with two Common Loons. These birds were located on the southern arm of the reservoir toward the restaurant about 3/4 of a mile past mile marker 18. These birds were swimming to the north towards the main part of the reservoir. There are several Common Loons at East Canyon so check them all carefully.

Sep 2005

Kristin Purdy (18 Sep 2005) - I just got a call (11:00 am, Sunday) from Arnold Smith, manager of the Morgan Wastewater Treatment Lagoons in Morgan City, Morgan County. He and his son Aaron believe they have either a Common Ground-dove or a Ruddy Ground-dove at the lagoons. They're both sure the bird is not an Inca Dove. Aaron is leaning toward female Ruddy Ground-dove. They say the bird is rather wary; Arnold has put out seed to encourage the bird to stick around.  The lagoons are normally locked and ground-dove seekers will need to contact Arnold for entry.

Kris Purdy (8 Sep 2005) - Pomera Fronce and I saw a Merlin near the Morgan City Water Treatment Lagoons in Morgan County this morning.

Nov 2004

Kris Purdy (23 Nov 2004) - ...East Canyon Reservoir hosted Hooded Mergansers in the east arm (2 drakes and a hen) and another drake at the south end. In addition, there were many goldeneyes of both species. I estimate at least a dozen Barrow's Goldeneyes were present. A Pacific Loon paired up with a Common Loon on the west side of the reservoir across from about mm 17 of SR-65...

Joel and Kathy Beyer (7 Nov 2004) - This morning we saw a juvenile Pacific Loon in the east arm of East Canyon Reservoir.

Lu Giddings (4 Nov 2004) - I visited East Canyon late this afternoon. At about 4:20 p.m. a Surf Scoter was seen in the company of about a dozen common goldeneyes in the vicinity of the boat ramp at the state park.

Oct 2004

Nonna (31 Oct 2004) - ...A female Rusty Blackbird was sighted at the Morgan Water Treatment Facility today Saturday October 30th. The bird was first seen by Arnold Smith and then seen by Aaron, Weston, Shauna, and Louise Smith. The bird was seen several times over a two to three hour period foraging in an empty pond on equatic insects. Several pictures were taken of the bird. Also of note was a Green Heron and the Surf Scoter was back. Anyone wanting to try and see these birds should call Arnold Smith on his cell at 801-791-5390 or at home 801-829-3383.

Kristin Purdy (27 Oct 2004) - I birded East Canyon Reservoir in Morgan County today and came up with a slightly eclectic mix of goodies. First, three juvenile Surf Scoters swam on the far side of the reservoir across from mile 16.5 on SR-65... Six Hooded Mergansers (five of which were males--gorgeous) swam down near the south end. I also saw a small flotilla of Red-breasteds and Commons throughout...

Glenn B. Barlow (17 Oct 2004) - ...Our next stop, thanks to Arnold's son, Aaron, was in Mountain Green, searching for a Blue Jay. ... we patiently waited the return of the jay. Merrill finally spotted it in a pine tree next to the house. We finally decided the best place for viewing was the platform feeder to the east of the house, which was near some scrub oak.... Shortly thereafter it appeared again on the feeder and we had a very nice view of the bird feeding on the feeder.

Dennis Shirley (14 Oct 2004) - Milt, Tuula, and I spent the day in several northern Utah counties today. Here's a list of the rarities we chased and the results....Surf Scoter - An immature has shown up at the Morgan Water Treatment Facility. We saw the bird at noon. It's apparently been around for a few days. The gates are locked to the ponds. You can either park at the gate and climb thru the fence or call Arnold Smith, who will let you in if he's available.  Hm #829-3383 Cell #791-5390

Nov 2003

Julie Van Moorhem (7 Nov 2003) - ...We had better luck at East Canyon. We saw a Pacific Loon at the boat ramp area of the state park, and three Surf Scoters on the east side of the reservoir just north of Tayor's Hollow area. Many Common Loons were on the lake, and we saw two Greater Yellowlegs along the mudflats. American Tree Sparrows were at the Taylor Hollow pull-out. We also saw 42 Wild Turkeys along the road to the dam from Morgan and about 20 American Crows.

Jack (7 Npv 2003) - At East Canyon Res. I saw Common Loons, Common Goldeneyes, Barrow's Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Herring Gulls, Northern Shrike, Gray Partridge, American  Tree Sparrows, and thanks to Julie three Surf Scoters

Edson Leite (6 Nov 3003) - I went to East Canyon Res today to look for the scooters and loons. There were two Pacific Loons one near the dam and the other in the second inlet. The Surf Scooter was at the first pull off area past the State Park entrance.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (2 Nov 2003) - We visited East Canyon Reservoir (Morgan Co.) this afternoon and saw several nice birds. Besides the 50 or so Common Loons there was one Pacific Loon (intermediate plumage between breeding and basic). Amongst the many ducks were 3 Surf Scoters, 1 White-winged Scoter, 5 male Barrow's Goldeneye, numerous Common Goldeneye, Hooded and Common Mergansers, Ring necked Ducks, Lesser Scaups, Buffleheads, etc. On the mudflats at the south end of the reservoir were a Baird's Sandpiper, a Red-necked Phalarope, an American Golden Plover, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, and Bonaparte's Gulls. An American Tree Sparrow was in the bushes along the road just south of the reservoir. Additionally, a Golden Eagle and 3 Bald Eagles were seen around the reservoir. On the south end of East Canyon, Little Dell Reservoir had a few birds, most notably a Horned Grebe.
