DAVIS COUNTY

A GREAT EGRET was seen at Farmington Bay WMA Wednesday, 07/22 (TJ). The bird was seen just south of the main road where it turns west. Also in the area were a COMMON MOORHEN and an EASTERN KINGBIRD.

DUCHESNE COUNTY A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen on the trail between the Mirror Lake Campground and Bonnie Lake on Sunday, 07/19 (J&KB). The bird was seen with several Red Crossbills about 3/4 mile along the trail from the campground.

A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen and heard drumming in the trees east of the parking area at the Bald Mountain Trailhead on Sunday, 07/19 (AG,SH,D&MS,YS). The bird was later seen in one of the dead trees at the southwest corner of the parking lot. A pair of Three-toed Woodpeckers was seen just east of the parking area on Wednesday, 07/22 (MM).

A female BLACK ROSY-FINCH was seen at the south end of the eastern face of Bald Mountain on the morning of Sunday, 07/19 (AG,SH,D&MS,YS).

A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH was working the trees in the same area. Another Black Rosy-Finch was seen at the Bald Mountain Trailhead parking lot on Wednesday, 07/22 (MM).

Several PINE GROSBEAKS were working the area around Mirror Lake on Sunday, 07/19 (AG,SH,D&MS,YS).

JUAB COUNTY A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen and heard along Tom's Creek, South of Callao in western Juab County on Saturday, 07/18 (AB). The bird was found during a bird survey for Utah State University. This is only the third record of White-eyed Vireo in Utah. To get to Tom's Creek, take the dirt road south from Callao, which is about 25 miles west of Fish Springs, and go four miles to the CCC Campground. Either walk or drive up the four-wheel drive road which starts opposite from the campground and follows the creek upstream. The bird was singing vigorously from a Cottonwood about 500 yds upstream on this road.

SALT LAKE COUNTY A SNOWY PLOVER and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were seen on Tuesday, 07/21, in the pond west of the exit, on the north side of I-80 at Saltair (CG&LW). Two more Snowy Plovers were seen along the frontage road about one mile east of Saltair.

A SHORT-EARED OWL has been seen regularly near the junction of State Route 111 and 11800 South, near Butterfield Canyon in southwest Salt Lake County. The most recent sighting was Saturday, 07/18 (DG).

A male EVENING GROSBEAK was observed feeding a juvenile along the boardwalk at Silver Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Sunday, 07/19 (KJ,TJ).

UTAH COUNTY The pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS which was seen along the Squaw Peak Road on Tuesday, 07/14, has been seen again, with the last report from Monday, 07/20 (CP). The birds have been at mile 13.1, in the tall aspens which are in the middle of the horseshoe bend in the road at that point. A high-clearance vehicle is required on the upper reaches of the Squaw Peak Road.

A number of interesting birds have been seen at the Swede Lane muflats on the south side of Provo Bay. On Tuesday, 07/21, 51 MARBLED GODWITS, 15 CASPIAN TERNS, 14 DOWITCHERS (probably Long-billed) and 5 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were present there. A male BLUE GROSBEAK was in the trees along the entrance road (MW). To get there, take the southern Springville exit from I-15, and go west to Swede Lane (2750 West) and go north, following the sign to the sportsman's access.
