re: Trumpeter/Tundra Swan at 4th N. Main in Salem

I have the 2 photos sent by Cliff Weisse, a terrible close-up of the bill that I took from the original photo and the interesting discussion regarding the Swan identification on my web site at

Scroll down to the bottom or click on "detail" for the comments made to date.

One question that I haven't seen addressed is the curve of the bill at the gape. In Sibley's book it shows the Trumpeter as having a straighter edge than the Tundra. While photographing the bird I noted that the legs looked grayish in real life. The bill is a beautiful dark pink.

Cliff if you get photos of juvenile Tundras and Trumpeters, I could add those to the page for further comparisons.

I appreciate all the comments and discussion. Very informative. Is there another place here in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah or Juab County that we could get some photos of juvenile and adult Swans right now or do we need to wait for the weather to warm up. I checked James Walter Fitzgerald WMA but it's completely iced over. I know Tim went to Fish Springs, but I'm a little leery of that road at this time. Whatever this bird is, I need to get a photo of the opposite species anyway.

Thanks again for the informative comments sent in.
