Message: My wife, Nancy Nelson, and I vacationed in Utah from Oct. 4 through Oct. 14. We are members of New Hampshire Audubon and birded many locations while in your awesomely beautiful state. Although now outdated, for your information, here are the highlights of our sightings, arranged by degree of rarity.

Major locations birded included:
Antelope Island State Park Causeway (AIC)
Bear River National Wildlife Refuge (BRR)
High Uinta Wilderness Area (HUWA) along Rt. 150
Mount Timpanagos Alpine Loop (TIM) along Rt. 92
Nature Conservancy Great Salt Lake Shoreline Reserve (GSLR) near Layton
Mount Nebo Scenic Byway (NEBO) south of Payson
Capital Reef National Park (CRNP)
Bryce Canyon National Park (BCNP)
Zion National Park (ZNP)

RARE species:

Bald Eagle (state checklist)--1 adult and 1 juvenile on Oct. 6 over Hwy. 150 in the HUWA just north of Mirror Lake
Ring-necked Pheasant (AIC checklist)--1 male on Oct. 4 about 200 feet west of the AIC toll station
Eurasian Collared-Dove (state checklist)--6 on Oct. 10 & 11 in the Town of Tropic on Rt. 12 east of BCNP
Red-breasted Nuthatch (ZNP checklist)--2 on Oct. 13 in ZNP at Lava Point overlook. (Several others seen elsewhere in state.)

OCCASIONAL species:

Snow Goose (BRR checklist)--about 40 circling around east of I-15 and descending toward Willard Bay on Great Salt Lake
Lesser Yellowlegs (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR

UNCOMMON species:

Blue-winged Teal (AIC & BRR checklists)--several on Oct. 4 at the west end of AIC, several on Oct. 5 at BRR
Ring-necked Pheasant (BRR checklist)--1 male on Oct. 5 at BRR
Pied-billed Grebe (BRR checklist)--2 on Oct. 5 at BRR
Western Grebe (BRR checklist)--about 10 on Oct. 5 at BRR
Clark's Grebe (BRR checklist)--about 10 on Oct. 5 at BRR
American Kestrel (BRR checklist)--1 on Oct. 5 at BRR
Blue Grouse (ZNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 13 along Kolob Terrace Rd., but not in park
American Coot (ZNP checklist)--about 25 on Oct. 13 in a pond on private property on Lava Point Rd. (20,000+ also seen at BRR on Oct. 5.)
Black-bellied Plover (state checklist)--about 10 on Oct. 4 at AIC
Killdeer (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR
American Avocet (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR. (Maybe 2,000 seen on Oct. 4 at AIC.)
Greater Yellowlegs (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR
Baird's Sandpiper (state checklist)--about 15 on Oct. 4 at AIC
California Gull (BRR checklist)--several dozen on Oct. 5 at BRR, mostly along the entrance road. (Dozens seen elsewhere in state.)
Mourning Dove (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR
Greater Roadrunner (ZNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 13 in Town of Virgin west of ZNP on Kolob Terrace Rd about 1/2 mile north of Rt. 9
Red-naped Sapsucker (BCNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 11 at BCNP. (Another seen at ZNP on Oct. 12.
Downy Woodpecker (ZNP checklist)--2 on Oct. 12 & 13 at ZNP along Weeping Rock Trail and near Visitor Center
Dusky Flycatcher (ZNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 13 at ZNP along Pa'Rus Trail
Pinyon Jay (ZNP checklist)--2 on Oct. 13 at ZNP along Pa'Rus Trail. (About 6 also seen on Oct. 10 at CRNP.)
Cliff Swallow (BRR checklist)--dozens on Oct. 5 at BRR, mostly along the entrance road
Barn Swallow (BRR checklist)--about a dozen on Oct. 5 at BRR, along the entrance road
Clark's Nutcracker (CRNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 10 at CRNP near midpoint of Park's scenic road. (Several seen at BCNP on Oct. 11 as well.)
Black-capped Chickadee (BCNP checklist)--3 on Oct. 11 at BCNP
Canyon Wren (BCNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 11 at BCNP at Ponderosa Point overlook. (3 more seen on Oct. 12 at ZNP.)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (BCNP checklist)--1 on Oct. 11 at BCNP along Bristlecone Pine trail at end of scenic road
Mountain Bluebird (ZNP checklist)--2 on Oct. 13 along Kolob Terrace Rd. (Several others seen elsewhere in southern Utah.)
European Starling (BRR checklist)--a few on Oct. 5 at BRR. (Thousands seen elsewhere in the state.)
Song Sparrow (BRR checklist)--a couple on Oct. 5 at BRR
White-crowned Sparrow (BRR checklist)--a few on Oct. 5 at BRR
Dark-eyed Junco (BRR checklist)--a few on Oct. 5 at BRR (Oregon subspecies)(Dozens seen elsewhere in state.)
