Utah Breeding Bird Atlas

The 2005 season for the Utah Breeding Bird Atlas project is now upon us.

The Utah BBA is a joint project of the Utah Ornithological Society and
the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Partners in Flight program.

Volunteers are sought to adopt a 'square' and survey the birds within it
during the breeding season, which for most species began yesterday, May
15 and extends to July 15.

Birders are requested to visit the official web site, www.utahbba.com to
learn more and sign up, then select a square to survey. Each survey
point within the square should be surveyed at least 3 times, early,
midseason and late to find bird species that may breed and nest at
different times.

Squares consist of one sixth of a topographic map, and are approximately
3 miles on a side. Squares have been randomly selected across the
state, amounting to about 10% of the land area. Survey points will be
assigned by habitat within the squares, with an average square having 5
survey points.

Squares are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Volunteers
should be able to see and identify most Utah species, using a field
guide if necessary. If needed, volunteers can take several years to
complete their square, although it is preferred that volunteers complete
one or more squares each year. Many squares are in remote locations and
require the volunteer be is good physical shape, while other squares are
easy to access and survey. All squares are important.

Volunteers who have squares already assigned may log into the web site
and continue work on their square or may request additional squares.

Other volunteer opportunities exist for regional coordinators, trainers
and publicity. If you have an interest in these areas and would like to
help this important work move forward, please email Robin Tuck at
robin@utahnature.com or phone him at (801) 377-8084.

Thank you,

Robin Tuck
Utah BBA Chairman
