Sandhill Cranes Migrating South

Today, I saw a bunch, about 50, Sandhill Cranes flying very high-up above the ground, heading due South, above my house in the Salt Lake Valley, East Millcreek area.

I first noticed their distinctive pre-historic rattle calls as I was working in the garden.  At first I could not tell where the sound was coming from, as I listened I realized it was the distinctive sound of Sandhills, and I looked up.  At first I could not see them.  Then scanning the sky I noticed their chevron formation and realized, indeed, they were Sandhills.  I ran and got my binoculars and sure enough, their distinctive rust coloration of mature Summer plumage was evident.  What an awesome sight!  One of those sights that you only see when you are in the right place at the right time, makes me feel lucky.  I also saw them last Spring migrating North, so this makes a complete cycle.  They have surely staged and left the North-country for their favorite Winter grounds.  Here's to wishing them safe passage, may no hunter's bullets find them.
