AIC and Bear River 10,000 Phalarope



utah birders,

I headed up to Bear River NWR this morning, and the water situation is gettting
worse, as the water in the main impoundment is lower than ever.  However it
does create a shorebird haven!  A few peeps, but not much, here are the species
and numbers from the refuge:

59 Least Sandpiper
36 Western Sandpiper
2 Semipalmated Sandpiper
1 Baird's sandpiper
9 Long-billed Dowitcher
2 Snowy Plover
2 Long-vbilled Curlew
750+ Red-necked Phalarope
250+ Wilson's Phalarope
5,000+ Black-necked Stilt
2,000+ American Avocet
45 Willet

also seen:

Clark's Grebe (100+) I have a pic of a adult Clark's with a juvenile Western
Western Grebe (100+)
Pied-billed Grebe (11)
Double-crested Cormorant (2)
Ameriocan White Pelican (18)
Great Blue Heron (23)
Snowy Egret (52)
Black-crowned Night-Heron (2)
White-faced Ibis (100+)
Canada Goose (74)
Mallard (many)
American Wigeon (1 male)
Northern Pintail (2)
Blue-winged Teal (12)
Turkey Vulture (1)
and Eastern Kingbird, Western Kingbid, American Goldfinch, Marsh Wren, Common
Yellowthroat, Western Meadowlarrk, RW YH and Brewer's Blackbird, BH Cowbird, 1
Ring-billed Gull, California Gull, Franklin's Gull,1 Caspian Tern, Forester's
Tern, etc, etc, etc.

At AIC (antelope island causeway)the water situation is only worse, however the
shorebirds are everywhere:

10,000+ Red-necked and Wilson's Phalaroe (they are everywhere!)
27 Western Sandpiper
40 Least Sandpiper
2 Baird's Sandpiper
7 Sanderling
1 Marbled Godwit
1 Snowy Plover
100+ Willet
1,000+ American Avocet
1,000+ Black-necked Stilt
1,250+ Franklin's Gulls
