Green Heron'(s) at Jordan River Parkway

Colby Neuman and I went to the Jordan River Parkway in search of Green Heron for
the second time this summer, and were delighted to see not just one, but as
many as 5 different birds flying. It is hard to say, but with so many birds
being seen there is a good chance that there are several breeding, or already
have bred pairs in the immediate area. At one point 3 individuals could be
heard calling on the canal that runs out of the river west towards Decker Lake.
These birds were in the area described by Jack Holley along the Oxbow Trail,
and will probably remain for a few more weeks before they head south. This is
a great Salt Lake County bird for anyone county listing, and for these birds to
be nesting here 2 years in a row is a good sign that they may establish a
permanent population during the spring and summer in the Salt Lake Valley. If
you walk the paths there is a good chance to just see one fly over, but your
best bet is to head towards the canal and wait to hear one then try to locate
it. Other birds of note between the Oxbow trailhead and the Decker Lake Canal
were:

1 Black-chinned Hummingbird
California Quail
Ring-necked Pheasant
4 Western Kingbird
10+ Bullock's Orioles
Marsh Wren
2 American Goldfinch

No Common Goldeneye today :(

Good Birding.
