Peregrine Update

Hi Folks -

When I got up this morning, I looked at my long list of "things" to do today.  I tried to feel guilty for a few minutes, set the list aside and headed downtown to check out the Peregrine Falcons.

The second young one left the nesting box this morning about six o'clock and made a short flight eastward and landed on the four story LDS Church Administration Building.  A few more short flights were without incident and she eventually landed in the shade of one of the temple spires.  She spent most of her time resting, sometimes in the prone position (we dubbed her the Black Skimmer Peregrine) and other times standing up.  She was alert and preening at other times.

The bird that fledged on Sunday was up and flying early this morning and doing well.  He decided to spend a good deal of his time today on top of the Administration Building in the shade.  We could not see him from street level and periodically, someone had to venture up into one of the taller surrounding buildings to make sure he was doing okay.  It was determined that all was well with this young one although his actions could not be monitored because of his position on the roof.  Someone observed one of the adults bring food to him during the early morning hours.  Both young ones were fairly sedentary during the several hours I was there.

The parents were a bit more relaxed today.  We kept the female in sight most of the time.  She could often be seen resting in the shade.  Once, she returned to survey the nesting box.  I think she was considering her remodeling options since the kids had left home.  The male was a bit more elusive today.  We didn't see much of him.

I couldn't get clear on how much longer Bob Walters and crew plan to monitor the birds.  Regardless of when the volunteers leave, the birds should be around for a few more weeks.
