Summer's Gone?

Summer may have passed us by,
But Jack, please don't despair.
The birds have not all headed south;
Our loyal friends are everywhere!

Methinks you might have overlooked,
The gems within your reach.
Have faith in me; take my advice!
Fall ain't a birding breach.

Those flickers on your deck today;
Most gorgeous of all birds.
Their spots!  Brown bars!  Those malar stripes!
They inspire flattering words.

Do you imply, the birds close-by
Don't excite?  Don't make you quiver?
I fancy chirps, in offended tones,
"Hey, what are we--chopped liver?"

It takes more work to find them,
But I'll guarantee you that,
If you choose a varied landscape,
You'll see birdies in that habitat.

So pick a spot that offers much,
Like river, woods, and sky.
And you'll see winged-ones, guaranteed!
Some hop, some soar, some'll flutter-by.

Fall also brings a blessing,
With the dawning of October.
There's more for you in days ahead;
Know that the fun ain't over!

Don't forget migration,
Is a double-edged sword, of sorts
Some favorites go, some favorites come;
New birds for us to exhort!

Trust me, Jack; there's more to come!
Those birds you should anticipate!
Those missing in the summer months;
One word; those birds--they titillate!

Great birds are in your future,
Buntings--Merlins--Rough-legged Hawks.
Look forward to what you might see,
When you take a birding walk.

If inspiration escapes you,
For a place to bird, then come,
Up my way, to Utah's top.
And you'll have birding fun!

Box Elder, Weber, Cache, or Davis
Counties with birds to spare.
In fact, sometimes, we're even known,
For birds extrarodinaire.

So, Jack, again; I must relay
Do not despair!  Do not delay!
Grab camera, binocs, and drive away,
To the Top of Utah, for your birding day!

Kris

Subject: [BirdTalk] summers gone

Hi,

Oh no. I am sitting here watching a couple of flickers at my feeder and wondering why I am home instead of somewhere doing some serious birdwatching. There it is on my fence. A junco. Summer is gone.

Jack
