Northern Bobwhite

Yesterday, my wife called to tell me she saw a Northern Bobwhite at the edge of our property in Emigration Canyon. Last evening when I got home, the bird was in our yard, pecking around under the bird feeders-- it was only about 6 feet from the window, and we got excellent, prolonged looks at it. No question about what it was. We excitedly called friends, and even though it moved off into the sagebrush, Bob Huntington was able to see it as well. Stupidly, we failed to photograph it when we had the chance.

Does anyone have information to suggest that this bird is planted, or an escapee? I can't imagine how such a bird could get here otherwise?
