Bear River Refuge Birds

Hi All:

Over the past week at the refuge, Bridget Olson and I observed some new
arrivals. Among the large number of avocets, Bridget found several snowy
plovers, a group of dowitchers, marbled godwits and also mountain bluebirds.
I observed a lone least sandpiper. There are both Clark's and western
grebes, growing numbers of pelicans, cormorants, black-crowned night-herons
and tree swallows. I was thrilled to be able to observe an adult golden
eagle sitting on a fence post at about 100 feet, and was also surprised to
see a rough-legged hawk. Is this late? The chorus of marsh wrens is almost
deafening! Today I kicked up two small flocks of mixed sparrows, including
Savannah, vesper, white-crowned, song and juncos. Several turkey vultures
have been in the area this week also.

Eagerly awaiting the next push of migrants...
