 Greetings!
As of Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.,
the Northern Hawk Owl is still in Ketchum.  For any who are not clear on
directions, here they are as posted by Kathleen Cameron, one of the folks who
originally located the bird:
The bird is in the Elkhorn Village
area. To get there, from highway
75, turn right (or East) at the Elkhorn light, which is on the south end of Ketchum. Follow Elkhorn road until you get to the village. Don't enter the village, stay on the main road as it proceeds right (veers right). Travel about 40 yards on the main road, and on the right you will see two houses and then shortly the right turn for Highland Road. The bird has been in the Aspens and Pines at those two houses. It is moving from the front of the houses to the back, so look around. It is a totally beautiful bird! Kathleen joined several Utah birders this
morning to admire the owl and posted this report which may be
helpful:
I hope that everyone that comes up over the weekend to see the
owl
finds it. Most of you know this but just a reminder: Don't look for it like you are looking for a Great Horned. It isn't hiding or roosting, it sits on the very top of a pine tree, and it is constantly moving its head looking for prey. My usual experience is that I sit and sit and it sits and sits while I wait for it to fly and it never does. I have watched it scanning for prey and not flying for over an hour even. You will be surprised at how close you can get, and how to close to all the hustle and bustle the owl may be perched. It is not uncommon for buses to be driving right under it. Enjoy!
