Neotropic Cormorant

(E-mails from Richard Young, 17 Aug 2010)

...The largest number of Neotropic Cormorants observed simultaneously in Utah was recorded on May 2, 2010 at Mill Race Pond, Taylorsville, UT. (7 individuals: 6 juveniles and 1 "apparent adult") http://www.utahbirds.org/RecCom/2010/2010_20Summary.htm

As I have continued to study NECOs at that location from May 2 to the present time, NECOs displaying adult breeding plumage have never been more than 1; accompanied by 1 to 5 juveniles on any given day.

All that changed within a time period of a week. A second adult appeared, then a third adult showed up during the time of Aug. 5 and 9, 2010.

I believe the attached image of the 3 adult NECOs with breeding plumage represents the largest number of adults seen at one location in Utah up to the present time. Other sightings have consisted of mostly juveniles, with an occasional adult being reported.

Best Regards
