Bryce Canyon Christmas Bird Count

Tuesday, 17 December 2013

The Bryce Canyon Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17th from ~8a.m.- ~4p.m. This will be the 114th count since the Audubon Society began this survey in 1900, and the 8th year in a row of park participation (sponsored by the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association - thank you!!). We have counted over 80 species in the Bryce Canyon circle, adding new birds every year! See the attached checklist for likely birds in our count circle.

Anyone is welcome to participate (with the approval of your supervisor) and any help is appreciated - you don't have to be an experienced birder! Please let me know if you plan to attend!

On the day of the count, please meet at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center (Rm D) at 8a.m. (weather may be tricky, so we know some folks will be late). We will split into groups and assign routes at that time (see list of possible routes below). If you have route preferences, please let me know asap so I can save those routes. Hot food, snacks, beverages and cookies will be available all day in the conference room for those who need a break! (If anyone is willing/able to bring treats - cookies, muffins, soup, bread, etc - please let me know!) All participates will also receive a 2013 Christmas Bird Count t-shirt.

You never know what the weather will bring for the bird count but it's guaranteed to be cold so wear layers, bring warm beverages, snow shoes and yaktrax (the park has some of each that we can also loan out), a 4x4 vehicle if you have one and want to go on an "adventurous driving route" and a positive attitude to get out there and find those birds!

See you on Tuesday! Let me know if you have any questions!
Sarah
