| Fourteenth Report of the Utah Birds
Records Committee B November
2006 Rick Fridell, Ron Ryel, Terry Sadler, Mark Stackhouse, Larry Tripp, Merrill Webb, David Wheeler, and Milton Moody (Secretary) The fourteenth report of the Utah Bird Records Committee summarizes 51 records of 37 species submitted in 2005. This includes nine old records (from 1983 to 1995) that had not previously been reviewed by the Committee. The following committee members participated in the review of the records included in this report: Rick Fridell, Ron Ryel, Terry Sadler, Mark Stackhouse, Larry Tripp, Merrill Webb and David Wheeler. This report adds one species to the checklist of the birds of Utah. A first state record for Ruby-throated Hummingbird was accepted by the Committee, bringing the total for the Utah bird list to 431 species. All records evaluated by the Committee are listed by common and scientific name using the nomenclature and taxonomic order of the 7th American Ornithologist=s Union Check-list of North American Birds, 47th supplement. The following information is included with each record: common name, scientific name (in parenthesis), record number, the number of records accepted for this species in the last ten years followed by a A /@ and then the total number of official sightings for Utah (in parenthesis), the number of birds observed along with age and sex if known, location of sighting, date(s) of occurrence, observers with the initial finder listed first, observer(s) who submitted written documentation of the record, observer(s) who submitted photographs or videos, and the final-round vote of the committee (in parenthesis) with the first number being the A accept@ votes and the second number being the A not-accept@ votes. The Utah Bird Records Committee would like to thank those individuals who submitted documentation of their sightings. The Committee encourages all observers to document and submit a report of unusual sightings. Multiple documentation of sightings is more valuable than a single report, since one observer may notice key field marks not reported by other observers; those field marks may contribute significantly to the value of the record. The submission of photographs and recordings of songs or calls, along with the written documentation is strongly encouraged by the Committee. Records reviewed by the UBRC: CACKLING GOOSE (Branta hutchinsii). 2005-07 (1/1). Because the intermediate-sized subspecies are not yet well defined after the recent split, the committee deliberated this record at length, but could not completely eliminate the small subspecies of Canada Goose (parvipes) as a possibility, without the aid of photographs. One juvenile was reported at Antelope Island State Park Causeway in Davis Co., on 4 Aug 2005 by Tim Avery. Documentation by TA. Because of the early date of this sighting and the possibility that this species could be mistaken for a juvenile Red-necked Phalarope at this time of year, the committee felt there was not enough evidence to accept this record without the support of photographs or additional descriptions. (2nd Rnd: 2-5) RED PHALAROPE (Phalaropus fulicaria). 2005-31(R92). One individual was reported at Howard Slough WMA in Davis Co., on 30 May 1992 by Peter Paton and Jack Dalton. Documentation by PP. Brief information about the sighting along with a photograph taken by an unknown photographer, were forwarded to the committed by Keith Day. The committee unanimously concluded that the bird in the photograph was indeed a Laughing Gull, however, since the observer was unknown, there was not enough evidence to prove the photograph was taken at the reported location. (3rd Rnd: 0-7) LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (Larus fuscus). 2005-03 (4/5). One first winter bird was seen at the Bountiful Landfill in Davis Co., on 3 January 2005 by Tim Avery and Ken Behrens. One adult male was reported at Welcome Springs in Washington Co., on 16 Oct 2004 by Kathy and Joel Beyer. Documentation by K&JB. Despite a thorough description, the committee felt that the possibility of this being a Red-naped or hybrid Sapsucker was not completely eliminated. Clearly differentiating these species without the aid of photographs can be very difficult. (0-7) RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER (Sphyrapicus ruber). 2005-01. One individual was reported at Zion River Resort, in Virgin, Washington Co., on 31 December 2004 by Mark Thompson and Kristy Sholly. Documentation by MT and KS. The committee felt that the written documentation was not sufficient to adequately eliminate the possibility of a hybrid Red-breasted by Red -naped Sapsucker. Hybrid sapsuckers are regularly observed wintering in the Upper Virgin River Valley however Red-breasted Sapsuckers are very seldom observed except in late fall and early spring. (3rd rnd: 1-6) RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER (Sphyrapicus ruber). 2005-50. One adult was reported at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Washington Co., on 8 Nov 2005 by Patricia Richards. After studying the provided photographs, written documentation, and measurements, the majority of the committee determined that the record likely represented a first-year male Common Yellowthroat. No Utah records of Mourning Warbler records have been accepted to date. (2nd Rnd 1-6) CANADA WARBLER (Wilsonia canadensis). 2005-28(R95). One female reported at Fish Springs NWR in Juab Co., on 19 Sep 1995 by Alan S. Condie. Documentation by ASC. (2nd Rnd: 2-5) PAINTED REDSTART (Myiorborus pictus). 2005-35 (3/8). Documentation by Rick Fridell and photographs by PL. (7-0) LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH (Carduelis lawrencei). 2005-21 (3/3). An adult male was observed at Lytle Ranch in Washington Co., on 16 Oct 2004 by Joel and Kathy Beyer. Documentation by J&KB. (7-0) * Because sightings of the Tennessee Warbler have seemed to decline in recent years, the Records Committee voted in July of 2005 to place this species on the Review List in order to monitor and document its abundance in Utah. Therefore the A (1/?)@ indicates that this is the first sighting documented by the Committee in the last ten years and that previous sighting were not reviewed by the Committee.
