ELEVENTH REPORT OF THE UTAH BIRDS RECORDS COMMITTEE

JUNE 2003

Rick Fridell, Steven Hedges, Ron Ryel, Terry Sadler, Mark Stackhouse, Steve Summers, Merrill Webb, and Matt DeVries (Secretary).

Introduction

This eleventh report of the Utah Bird Records Committee summarizes 103 records of 66 species that were reviewed by the Committee. The committee accepted 82 of the 103 records submitted for an 80% acceptance rate. The following committee members participated in the review of some or all of the records included in this report: Rick Fridell, Steven Hedges, Ron Ryel, Terry Sadler, Ella Sorensen, Mark Stackhouse, Steve Summers, Clayton White, and Merrill Webb.

First state records were accepted for the following eleven species, bringing the Utah bird list to 426 species.

Magnificent Frigatebird
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
Ruff
Yellow-footed Gull
Eurasian Collared-Dove
Elf Owl
Philadelphia Vireo
Blue-winged Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Canyon Towhee
Lawrence's Goldfinch

All records evaluated by the Committee are listed by common and scientific name using the nomenclature and taxonomic order of the 7th American Ornithologist’s Union Check-list (1998) and the 42nd (2000) and 43rd (2002) A.O.U. check-list supplements. The following information is included with each accepted record: common name, scientific name (in parenthesis), record number, the number of birds observed along with age and sex if known, location of sighting, date(s) of occurrence, observers with the initial finder listed first, observer(s) who submitted written documentation of the record, and observer(s) who submitted photographs or videos. Information for records not accepted by the committee is the same as for accepted records except that names of observers and those submitting documentation are not included.

The Utah Bird Records Committee would like to thank those individuals who submitted documentation of their sightings to the Committee. The Committee encourages all observers to document and submit a report of unusual sightings. Multiple documentation of sightings is often more valuable than a single report, since one observer may notice key field marks that are missed by other observers. Those field marks may be the difference between a record being accepted or not accepted. The Committee also encourages the submission of photographs and tape recordings of songs or calls, which significantly aid in the review and evaluation of records.

WHITE-TAILED KITE (Elanus leucurus). 2002-28. One adult located at Locomotive Springs WMA, Box Elder Co., on 12 July 2002. The committee felt the description did not adequately rule out a male Northern Harrier, particularly the behavior and described vocalization. 3rd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (Buteo lineatus). 2000-13. One sighted at Fish Springs NWR, Juab Co. from 25-30 July 2000. Without a written description or photograph, this record lacked sufficient detail for acceptance. 2nd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

ZONE-TAILED HAWK (Buteo albonotatus). 1996-10. Observed at Enterprise Reservoir, Washington Co., on 7 September 1996. Although, many committee members felt this record was very possibly of a Zone-tailed Hawk, the brief description lacked sufficient details for acceptance. 3rd Rd: 1 Y – 6 N.

PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER (Pluvialis fulva). 1995-8. Observed on a mudflat in the Great Salt Lake, south of Willard Bay State Park and east of Harold S. Crane WMA, Box Elder Co., on 18 September 1995. Separation of this species from American Golden Plover represents a difficult identication challenge. The committee felt that a more detailed description and perhaps photographic evidence was necessary for acceptance as a first state record. 0 Y - 5 N – 2 Abs.

RED KNOT (Calidris canutus). 2000-15. Ten alternate plumaged birds observed at Fish Springs NWR, Juab Co., on 17 May 2000. The committee felt the description and drawings more closely described Sanderlings than Red Knots, especially the description of the behavior, size, underparts, and leg color. 2nd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

MEW GULL (Larus canus). 1999-15. One first year bird located at North Park, Spanish Fork, Utah Co. on 24 October 1999. The committee felt the description did not adequately rule out a small Ring-billed Gull. 2nd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

ICELAND GULL (Larus glaucoides). 1998-1. A first winter gull reported from Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (nw. corner of the dike loop road), Box Elder Co., on 14 March 1998. Although multiple observers described this bird and the documentation included photographs, the committee felt this gull could not be safely separated from a juvenile Thayer’s Gull. Reliable identification of juvenile Iceland and Thayer’s Gulls in worn late first-winter plumage may not be possible without careful analysis of detailed photographs or a specimen. 3rd Rd: 0 Y – 7 N

GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL (Larus glaucescens). 1998-2. A first winter gull observed at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Box Elder Co., on 14 March 1998. The committee deliberated on this intriguing record for three rounds. Although four members accepted this record (five votes are necessary for acceptance), other members felt the description either did not adequately rule out a worn late winter Herring Gull or a hybrid Glaucous-winged Gull. 3rd Rd: 4 Y - 2 N - 1 Abs.

EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVE (Streptopelia decaocto). 2002-29. One located at a residence in South Jordan, Salt Lake Co., on 22 September 2002. Although the committee thought the description fit a Streptopelia dove, most members felt there was insufficient information to rule out a Ringed Turtle-Dove. 2nd Rd: 2 Y - 5 N.

VAUX’S SWIFT (Chaetura vauxi). 2002-25. One adult found at River Lane near the mouth of the Spanish Fork River, Utah Co., on 23 May 2002. The majority of the committee felt the description was insufficient to rule out a Chimney Swift. 3rd Rd: 2 Y - 5 N.

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (Sphyrapicus varius). 2002-20. One adult male observed in South Ogden, Weber Co., during summer, 1999. This identification of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was based on an out-dated field guide that did not separate Red-naped and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. 0 Y - 7 N.

PHILADELPHIA VIREO (Vireo philadelphicus). 2002-23. One adult located at Red Hills Golf Course, St. George, Washington Co., on 14 May 2002. The committee felt the description, specifically the description of the loral area, and overall size and shape, lacked necessary detail to adequately rule out a bright Warbling Vireo. 2nd Rd: 1 Y - 6 N.

LECONTE’S THASHER (Taxostoma lecontei). 1994-9. Observed at Snow Canyon State Park, Washington Co., on 29 December 1994. Although several committee members accepted this record, others felt that definitive characteristics were not described to adequately rule out a Crissal Thrasher. 3rd Rd: 3 Y - 4 N.

OLIVE-BACKED PIPIT (Anthus hodgsoni). 1996-9. One individual reported from Utah Lake State Park, Utah Co, on 29 May 1996. The committee concluded that there was insufficient detail for acceptance as a first state record. 0 Y - 6 N - 1 Abs.

HOODED WARBLER (Wilsonia citrina). 1981-1. Adult male located at the Chamberlain Ranch, upper North Fork of the Virgin River, Kane Co., on 10 September 1981. Due to the time elapsed between the observation and subsequent documentation (over 19 years), and without a photograph or sketch, the committee concluded there was insufficient detail and description for acceptance. 0 Y - 7 N.

CANYON TOWHEE (Pipilo fuscus). 2002-18. One adult located on 21 May 2002, along the east side of the Jordan River Parkway, approximately ½ mile south of 4800 South, Salt Lake Co. The committee concluded there was insufficient information for acceptance. 0 Y - 7 N.

NORTHERN CARDINAL (Cardinalis cardinalis). 1999-11. A male located in Orem, Utah Co. on 13 May 1999. Although the committee agreed this was likely a Northern Cardinal, the origin of this individual was questioned (likely a released or escaped bird). 2nd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

BROWN-CAPPED ROSY-FINCH (Leucosticte australis). 2001-21. One winter male sighted at Spring Creek Road, south of the Monticello airport, San Juan Co., on 23 November 2001. The committee concluded the description lacked sufficient details for acceptance as a first state record. 2nd Rd: 0 Y - 7 N.

PURPLE FINCH (Carpodacus purpureus). 2002-41. An adult female located west of Escalante, Garfield Co., from 10 September to 7 October 2002. The committee concluded the description and photograph did not rule out a female Cassin’s Finch (specifically the prominent eye-ring, bill shape, malar color, and face and back pattern). 0 Y - 7 N.
