Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
I was under the impression that this bird was a CONI until another eBirder flagged the picture, stating that it looked better for LENI. County reviewer Jeff Cooper reached out to me after having done extensive research on the two and we determined that this was correct. He also consulted Mark Stackhouse, confirming the ID, and received several other confirmations from other birders on the Advanced Bird ID Facebook page.

The buffy markings extending along the primaries as far as they do, and the round buffy scapular markings are both indicative of female Lesser Nighthawk. The wingbar is hardly noticeable, as is typical of females, and the last buffy marks seen on the primaries are where the buffy (not white) wingbar would be for a Lesser.
Song or call & method of delivery:
Behavior:
Habitat:
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Common Nighthawk is eliminated due to the length of the primary projection, the buffy markings on the primaries, and the placement of the final buffy-ish marking on the primaries that appears to be the wingbar, placed exactly where it would be for a Lesser.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
Extensive experience with Common, and lots of experience with Lessers in Washington Co, AZ, and MX.
