Field Marks and Identifying Characteristics: |
"Adult male in breeding plumage, flew by low heading east 80m north of
road at 5.5mm, viewed in binos, medium sized shorebird, long straight
bill, very red belly, dark back, wings black with bold white wing bar,
tail black with white base. Naked eye I assumed Dowitcher, which were
numerous, but wing bars and black and white tail off. Too red to be a
WILL(Willet), and not as much white in wing. Relocated 1/4 mile east,
additional featured noted, pale whitish head, bill pinkish orange based
and slightly recurved. Observed in scope for 15 minutes"-from notes
taken at time of sighting (see photos) |
| Song or call & method of delivery: | None heard |
| Behavior: | Initially seen in flight, then landed in a wet field and foraged with Ibis |
| Habitat: | Wet flooded field with thick short grass/sedge/rush, some shallow ponds, freshwater inflow onto mudflats from weber river via Howard Slough |
| Similar
species and
how were they eliminated: |
Marbled Godwit-uniform rusty brown, solid rusty wings and tail, no wing
bars and no black tail with white tail base, larger, seen later that day
for comparison. Bar-tailed Godwit-also lack the dark wing with a wing bar and lack the black tail with white tail base. Willet-uniform gray back, head and belly, white tail with black and white wings. Bill shorter, all dark Dowitchers-lack the white wing bar and black and white tail, have a white blaze on the back Whimbrel-uniform gray-brown without the wing bar or black and white tail, decurved bill, no red in plumage Long-billed Curlew-larger with longer decurved dark bill, uniform rusty brown, lack the wing bar and black and white tail. Direct comparison as one was in the same field. |
