Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
We were walking to go look at a pond and passed by some trees with bird movement. So we stopped to look. We saw a RCKI but I saw another bird that looked different. I watched it for awhile and noticed the very yellow green top of the head and back, the wing-bars, eye ring and the lack of color or streaking on the neck, belly on down the UTCs (although photos do show a very light yellow wash). I managed to get some less than ideal photos that do show shape, color, etc. I initially put it on our eBird list as warbler sp. as I wasn't 100%, then maybe 15-20 mins later it hit me it was a CSWA. I looked at Sibley, iBird Pro and we confirmed that was the bird we saw.
(see photos)
Song or call & method of delivery: Didn't hear a call. We were near a busy load road.
Behavior: Flitting in the tree near a RCKI and some YRWA's.
Habitat: Near a small creek and large field. Not 100% sure what tree type is. Willow?
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
YRWA- the lack of yellow rump, yellow sides and streaky chest eliminated this bird.
RCKI- The incomplete eye ring, thinner bill and coloring eliminated this bird.
BBWA- lacked Buffy flanks, yellow on sides of neck or white eye ring eliminated this bird.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
I have seen 3 other CSWA, all in Utah. Two immatures or females, one adult male.
