Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Head and upper breast entirely red except for narrow yellowish strip in front of eyes. No black patch on breast. No head markings or shadings to indicate hybrid. Black back with two rows of whitish spots. White vertical wing patch. White rump.

Behavior: Tending tap holes in fruit/nut tree orchard.
Habitat: Orchard in Mojave Desert river bottoms.
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Red-naped and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker eliminated due to lack of black or white markings or shading on head and no black patch on breast.

this & similar species:
First time sighting of this species. Have encountered and photographed Yellow-bellied and Red-naped Sapsuckers on several occasions.
