Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Overall yellowish warbler with contrasting white undertail coverts. Pale supercilium stood out on face. Tail was very short and wings had long primary projection with faint wingbars. Bill was short and sharply pointed.
Song or call & method of delivery: Called a few times. Different from the more metallic chip of Orange-crowned. High pitched and sharp chih.
Behavior: Pretty skulky- hanging out in a group of Orange-crowned Warblers and other migrants. Popped clearly into view on a 5 foot high Russian Olive, then disappeared and would not pop up.
Habitat: Taller grasses with Russian Olives interspersed.
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Any vireo species- small with shorter tail and short, sharply pointed bill.

Orange-crowned Warbler- had white undertail coverts, shorter tail and longer primary projection. No streaking on breast.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
I've seen many of each sex and age back in Western NY. Also very familiar with Orange-crowned Warblers as I have been seeing a bunch lately migrating through.
