Location: Provo Airport Dike
County: Utah
Latilong: N 40 13.548' W 111 42.794'. This is the location of the Dike. this bird was on the west side of the airport in the moat toward the south west corner.
Elevation: 4,497'
Distance to bird: we were on the road headed south and it was in the moat on the near side diving. 20-30' maybe
Optical equipment: Vortex Viper Binoculars 15x50, Canon SX50 camera
Weather: crisp 41 degrees Farenheit
Light Conditions: Partly cloudy
Description:        Size of bird: larger than a horned or eared grebe, but not as large as a western or clark's grebe.

(Description:)  Overall Pattern: gray, with a dull brownish neck, with pale ear patch
(Description:)            Bill Type: yellowish large bill

Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Larger than the eared and horned grebe and the yellowish larger bill. Looks like it could be a 1st winter or non breeding adult. I asked Michael and he thought probably a juvenile.

Song or call & method of delivery:  
Behavior: their was ice in the moat with a few small circles of open water, it was diving frequently.
Habitat: marshy area with a moat along a dirt road, Utah lake is on the opposite side of the road
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Horned grebe and eared grebe. Bills totally wrong, Clark's grebe though.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
NONE, Joellen has seen them before in the Mote at the Dike

Additional_Comments: We were driving south on the west dike road we had passed the airport tower and we were on the dirt road. The grebe was in some open patches of ice diving about maybe .02 of a mile before the south west corner of the dike road.

Micheal Lester confirmed this sighting on ebird. And sent me the link to fill out this report I do have photos that I am sending to Milton Moody.
