Light Conditions: bright mid-morning light
Detailed description of bird: Head: Bright yellowish green crown; grayish face and cheeks, whiter on throat; black eye with distinct complete white eye-ring; small, sharp black bill.
Upperparts: Bright yellowish green unmarked back (connecting with crown)and rump. Wings dark with two distinct yellowish wing bars and secondaries and tertials showing lighter yellowish edges. Upperside of tail dark. Black legs.
Underparts: Entirely pale, whiter on lower chest and belly, grayer on sides and flanks, with light yellowish tinge across vent area. Underside of tail light with black lateral and terminal edges. [see photos]
Song or call & method of delivery: Silent
Behavior: Actively foraging throughout large ash tree.
Habitat: In orchard area at Lytle Ranch, surrounded by cresote/Joshua tree desert, mesquite/acacia habitat and riparian corridor along Beaver Dam Wash.
Similar species and
how were they eliminated:
Yellowish green crown and back, yellow wing bars, complete white eye-ring and white undersides distinguish this warbler from all other species.
Previous experience with this & similar species: I have seen immature Chestnut-sided Warblers on many occasions, including a very similar individual that spent a week at the Quail Creek inflow area in late September 2001.
