Sep 2007

Rick Fridell (19 Sep 2007) - I just received a call from Steve Summers and he located the continuing Neotropic Cormorant at Quichapa Lake (Iron Co.). The cormorant was along the southeast shore in the company of many Double-crested Cormorants. After living in Cedar City for many years, Steve is back working there this week, and I believe the Neotropic Cormorant was Steve's 260th Iron Co. bird!

Rick Fridell (14 Sep 2007) - This afternoon at approximately 6:00 pm, Larry Tripp, Peyton Cook, and I saw the Neotropic Cormorant at Quichapa Lake (Iron Co.). It was perched in a dead tamarisk on the southeast shore with many Double-crested Cormorants.

Kristin Purdy (5 Sep 2007) - Tim Avery and Glenn Barlow traveled to Quichapa Lake west of Cedar City in Iron County yesterday and saw the Neotropic Cormorant along with 5-6 Double-crested Cormorants sitting on the fenceline where other observers have seen the bird.

Jack Binch (2 Sep 2007) - chasing the Neotropic Cormorant ...The group I was with on Friday was unsuccessful. I birded with Lu and Dennis on Saturday evening and they spotted the bird five minutes after I left. I went over to talk to Ed, and he had seen the bird fifteen minutes before I got there. I went back Sunday morning with the resolve to stay all day if necessary.... Thanks to the Beyers, David Wheeler and Larene Wyss. I guess the third time is the charm. BTW, it was 10:00 when I got to see it.

Tim Avery (1 Sep 2007) - I just received secondhand information that Steve and Cindy Sommerfield had relocated the Neotropic Cormorant at Quichipa Lake in Iron County, this morning, Saturday September 1st.

Aug 2007

Larry Tripp (31 Aug 2007) - The Neotropic Cormorant was still there tonight. I got to the lake at about 5:00 pm and looked in the spot where Rick first saw it and it wasn't there. I saw a lot of Cormorants were toward the south end of the Lake so I drove down the road on the west side ( coming from Cedar City it's the first left heading south after passing the lake. I went to 2000 south and drove the dirt road towards the lake parked and walked to the shore line. Looking to the south I first saw the bird on the dike that crosses the lake close to the south end. Rick showed up shortly after that and the bird had flown to the east side and was mixed in with a lot of D C Cormorants and White Pelicans. It took us a while to relocate the bird. When it's in the open it's pretty easy to pick out but it spent some time back in the bushes where it's hard to see. We watched it until sunset.

Tim Avery (30 Aug 2007) - I received a phone call from Rick Fridell around 11:30 this morning reporting a 1st year Neotropic Cormorant at Quichipa Reservoir/Lake just west of Cedar City. He told me the bird was sitting with Double-crested Cormorants on a fence line in the water along the west shore of the lake. Rick was headed to the west desert but plans on stopping back by the lake tomorrow evening to check on the bird. Also present were an adult Bald Eagle and a juvenile Eagle sp., as well as Common and Black Terns.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (15 Oct 2004) - We saw the pair of Lawrence's Goldfinch this morning in Kanarraville. They were in a tree on Main Street across from the LDS church. We only got to look at them for less than a minute before they flew to parts unknown. An hour of diligent searching was goldfinchless.

Steve Summers (12 Oct 2004) - This afternoon around 4 pm a visiting birder from Washington state reported to me a pair of Lawrence's Goldfinches in the town of Kanarraville, Iron Co. This is about 18 miles south of Cedar City. She saw the birds very well and certainly described this species to me. She is familiar with the species from California. They were seen along the street between the LDS Church and the Red Lodge R.V. park about a half block west of the main road...

Kevin Wheeler (12 May 2004) - Charlie Sheard and I saw an immature Brown Pelican at Newcastle Reservoir west of Cedar City in Iron County today between 10 and 11:30. It hung out on the south side of the Reservoir, and flew from the far bank to the close bank and then settled in the water on the south end. If you go to look for it, be careful - it seemed plenty skittish for a pelican. Also there were a pair of Common Mergansers, an osprey, and a loon.
