Kristin Purdy (21 Jun 2018) - [Farmington Canyon] - Broad-winged Hawk. Weird, huh? Bird soaring over rocky cliffs NE of the ATV trailer parking lot along Farmington Canyon Road at about these coords: 41°00'09.68" 111°52'45.9", being dive-bombed by an American Kestrel. Clearly a light morph buteo, but compact. Brown head becoming whiter through the breast and belly with no clear line of demarcation until completely white at lower belly and around feet. No belly band. Wings broad from leading to trailing edge; wing coverts and remiges white underneath with black wing tips and black border to trailing edge. No black patagium. Tail bold with three thick bands visible: black-white-black. Sun shone through the white band like a beacon. Then, joined by a soaring Peregrine Falcon; BWHA's wings clearly more broad leading-to-trailing edge and more rounded than the long tapered shape of the PEFA's; wingspan clearly shorter than PEFA's also. Easily watched this bird for 5 minutes or more with binos. Then, I self-resuscitated.

Jason K Pietrzak (2 Jun 2018) - [North Fork Virgin River Wilderness Study Area] - Rufous-crowned Sparrow. Seen, and heard well by my party while walking in the upper portion of the Zion Narrows. Bird was in pinyon-juniper habitat on steep slopes. Singing loudly, regretfully I didn't record this. I didn't immediately recognize the song, though it was familiar. A friend suggested it was House Wren-like in its chattering. After listening a little longer, we realized it was a sparrow and determined the ID. Very distinctive.

Small warbler-sized bird about five inches in length with glossy black head, breast and back, white belly and distinct orange wing markings. No other warbler looks like this. Had at least one minute looks as it flitted about in the thick branches of the Russian olive, once no more than five feet away from me. It also matched the song I played on my tape device.

Weston Smith (17 Jun 2018) - [East Canyon SP] - Gray Partridge. Chukar looking birds that flew up a few feet from us. No black necklace or black and white stripes on sides, rather cinnamon faces and reddish side stripes. First one few up and landed about 20 feet away, then after checking a box we went to investigate the area it flew from and had another one fly up. Aaron said he could see one running up the hill 20 feet or so from us this could have been the first bird. This was odd behavior and surely there was a nest or real small young hiding so we quickly left the area.

Observed at a distance of 10 feet atop a mahogany tree with a plant community of scrub oak, sage brush, mountain mahogany, and other bushy plants. Bird had a pale yellow belly, white throat, long rufous tail (with black on the tips), and short wings. Made many distinctive rough, high-pitched calls of two syllable phrases, which were repeated. I am very confident in this ID because I was able to get so close to the bird, and its calls matched recordings that I looked up for Ash-throated flycatchers in order to verify the species.

John Williams (5 Jun 2018) - [Sevier River Bike Path] - Red-eyed Vireo. This bird was in the upper story of the narrow leaf cottonwoods along the Sevier River in Marysvale Canyon. I had been seeing Plumbeous and Warbling vireos but then I heard this bird singing and knew it was a different species. It took some time before I found it but there was no doubt as to what it was. It looked larger and longer than either a plumbeous or warbling vireo. The marking's on its head were much more distinct and it sang constantly. I was able to watch and listen for 20 minutes as it moved through the tree tops.

Steve Clark (28 Jun 2018) - [Warm Springs WMA] - American Bittern. Seen in flight at 9:14. Flew directly in front of me from the east heading west/southwest toward the small pond and then over the Russian Olives beyond. Didn't even need binoculars for the first few seconds. As it flew it made the deep, hoarse "Kok", which is what actually alerted me to its presence in the first place. I had seen a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron fly by in almost the exact same direction about 15 minutes prior and land next to the pond. I had been watching it just before the Bittern flyby. It made for a good comparison. The Night-Heron's "Kwok" was higher pitched when it flew. The Bittern looked larger and overall longer. It was dark and long-striped on the underside. Quite a long bill. It felt less "chunky" than the Night-Heron, possibly because of the longer neck. Long-ish legs trailing behind. I could not tell if it looked "hunchbacked". Notes written down immediately after the sighting. An individual was seen here in June last year as well. Hopefully this one sticks around a while too.

Both birds drumming; one of them also observed. Female chipping bark on a tree just 15 feet from my first Brim ATTW in 2016; this is likely the same bird. Black-and-white small woodpecker; barred grayish sides to white belly; aggressively chipping bark from a reddish long-dead spruce trunk.

Compact and plump shape; thin, medium-length decurved bill; extra-full and wide magenta gorget; forehead, cheek, and possibly chin dusty black; indistinct white line from gape to below eye separating black cheek from gorget; white spot behind eye; lacking eye-line or ring; lacking partial white collar; generally green crown and back dusted with blackish and the faintest golden; sides greenish-gray lacking buffy; wingtips shorter than the tail; tail deeply notched in an inverted V; retrices edged in rufous at the base; retrices 2-4 and maybe 5 if I use my imagination notched on the inside tip, not spade-shaped or strongly pointed. ***Update on June 8, 2018: Confirmed as a Black-chinned x Calliope by Sheri Williamson, author of the Peterson Field Guide Hummingbirds of North America.
