Tom Wuenschell (31 May 2018) - [Murray's Hill Trail] - Flammulated Owl. This second nest box is located about 675 feet from the first one that had the juvenile saw-whet in it. In the same closed-canopy mature Bigtooth maple forest. Originally thought this box was not occupied. When I was extending the telescoping stepladder at the base of the tree the owl popped its head out. Got a couple quick pics and the owl flew to an adjacent tree. I quickly photographed the eggs and then quickly and quietly left the area. During this time the adult was making some kind of low pitched harsh barking sound.

John Williams (21 May 2018) - [Marysvale, UT] - Grace's Warbler. Saw these birds on a lilac bush in my yard. Was a little surprised but there are some tall ponderosa pines within 30 feet of the location where I saw them. I got a good look and am pretty sure of the identification.

John Williams (20 May 2018) - [Old Hwy 89 north of Piute Reservoir] - Pinyon Jay. This is a sagebrush steppe area on the eastern foothills of the Tushar Mountains. Elevation is about 6000 feet. Habitat is sagebrush moving into juniper and pinyon upslope. I first noted 10 to 15 birds along the edge of the dirt road I was following and as I approached a flock of at least 40 birds flushed and flew west and upslope. They were making their distinctive call and were unmistakably pinyon jays.

Kenny Frisch  (31 May 2018) - [Decker Lake] - Common Grackle. Continuing. Smaller than nearby Great-tailed Grackles with smaller bill and tail as well. Larger and bulkier than Brewer's Blackbird with a more keel shaped tail. Gave typical 'Jeer" call.

Pomera Fronce  (31 May 2018) - [Affleck Park - trailhead eastside of SR 65] - Red-eyed Vireo. Seen at five feet above eye level in a leafed out tree, but with a clear view of the bird. Greenish-yellow back, clean light breast with pale yellow showing at the shoulders and down the flanks. Long thick bill. Strong face pattern, gray crown with bold white eyebrow. The eye looked black because the bird was in the shade. We watched the vireo for about three minutes as it wrestled with a beetle longer that its bill. The bird had the beetle pinned to a branch and stabbed at it several times before snatching it up, "tossing" it around a bit and then swallowing it pretty much whole.

Had yellow green head with a more yellow throat, blueish gray back, 2 strong wing bars, the eye ring impressed me as more yellow than the photos show, only stayed around less than 10 minutes foraging in the Gambel Oaks.

Kendell Watkins (5 May 2018) - [Provo Airport Dike] - Neotropic Cormorant. Have photos of one of the individuals. Identified by smaller size (compared to DCCO), long tail, and brownish coloring. Also observed no yellow above the bill near the eye and a white border along the triangular ending of the gular patch.

Taylor Rogers (5 May 2018) - [Provo Airport Dike] - Merlin. This bird did not have the orange and blue colors of an American Kestrel. It was slightly larger than the kestrels I’ve seen. It did not have the brown mustache stripe of a Prairie Falcon and it was high in a tree. It had the thin white eyebrow of a Merlin. I’ve seen other Merlin’s and this bird looked similar. I looked at some of the pictures other people have uploaded of the Merlins they’ve seen in the same location and the bird I saw looked the same.

Maybe it is a better location than the park.

Mike Hearell (6 May 2018) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - Sanderling. Seen on a mudflat mixed in with WIPH and small peep species for size comparison. Size was right about half way between peeps and Wilson’s Phalaropes. Rusty head and back were clearly seen on 2 of the 3 individuals, third was slightly delayed in plumage. Undertail, belly, and chest appeared to be clean white, but tough to tell at the distance. Bill was short. Although seen at distance (>200 yards) the early morning lighting was perfect.

Kristin Purdy (5 May 2018) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - Stilt Sandpiper. In breeding plumage with a large flock of dowitchers. Smaller than the dowitchers, a much more active feeder, tilted down to water at a steeper angle. Medium-length black bill (for a shorebird) strongly decurved. Indistinct rust stripe over eye; pale supercilium; rust auricular patch; finely gray-streaked throat and neck into upper breast; heavily black-barred sides, flanks, and undertail coverts on a base color of white; cryptic wing coverts and back plumage; tertials edged in rust.
