Kevin Glueckert (15 May 2017) - [Sheep Creek Nature Trail] - Black-and-white Warbler. Singing frequently and identity confirmed by diagnostic song. Male of this species was then sighted scaling a large branch on one of the larger cottonwood trees in area. Black and white striped plumage clearly noted in plain view, ~ 22 m distant. Observed singing and navigating cottonwood trunk and branches by clinging to tree bark. Observation of this individual through Leica 8 x 42 binoculars lasted several minutes.

Pete Fenner (27 May 2017) - [Bryce Canyon NP] - Northern Parula. Saw and heard on both sides of stream before and after 1st bridge on trail enroute to Mossy cave about 11:15. I recognize this species as rare for this area but am very familiar with it in my home state of Illinois. Yellow bib with lower mandible same color, with dark lower border of bib before white belly, gray head, eye arcs visible. Green patch on back. Voice upward rising but buzzer than what I am used to in Illinois. Was foraging low and got great looks until other hikers scared it. Then it went high. No photos but may have audio.

Chares Kahr (26 May 2017) - [Alton, UT] - Greater Sage-Grouse. These Grouse were seen in an area being monitored by biologists. There are open pit coal mines in the area and some of the Grouse have GPS sensors attached to them. Although these grouse are outside their typical range, they have been seen here for a number of years. Our group of four were driving through Sagebrush area when the grouse were seen standing in the field next to the road. When we got closer the 10 birds flushed and flew off. One picture is of a bird in flight. Following the flight with our binoculars we determined where they landed and walked across the sagebrush for 1/4 mile. Getting closer we got a couple more pictures as the grouse started to walk over a hillside. Unfortunately none of the pictures have very good quality but it was clear viewing thru binoculars and a spotting scope that they were Greater Sage Grouse. The white breast can be seen contrasting with the black bib.

Typical ka-brick and keer-bir calls that are each less than a second in duration with several seconds between each call. Recording is worse than thought, but the ATFL can be heard between the 3-4 second mark (closer to the 4 second mark), but it takes good speakers to hear it...bluetooth via a car is one way versus my laptop where the speakers struggled to resolve it. The call was identified independently by my dad. We are both familiar with ATFL calls and in fact had heard them call in the desert outside of Lake Powell each morning the three previous days...one of which I was able to record.

Colby Neuman (5 May 2017) - [Lakeside Preserve - private access] - Trumpeter Swan. A surprise to say the least. The bird was quite wary and eventually took off to the south and headed towards Stansbury Park...may be worth checking the Kennecott Ponds in case it shows itself there for SL County. First noticed large white waterbird with long neck. The size even for a swan seemed noticeably big. The white on the forehead came to a sharp V vs a broad U shape in Tundra Swan. More importantly the eye and black associated with bare skin and bill were one dark area as opposed to a Tundra Swan where the black area connecting the eye to the bill is narrow. While not conclusive, this bird also lacked the yellow dot on the bill that most Tundra Swans exhibit.

Carl G. Lundblad (16 May2017) - [North shore of Utah Lake] - Scissor-tailed flycatcher. I was watching the little gull through the scope when I noted a kingbird on a brush pile in the foreground of my scope view. There was a funny little sprig of vegetation (so I thought) hanging awkwardly off the side of the brush pile adjacent to the bird. The sprig was bouncing around in the wind, and then it spread apart into a Scissor-shape. I said, "holy cow, is that actually a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher?"

Watched for several minutes and took field notes: Solid black cap covering eye, wide white cheek, black malar stripe, white below with sparse black streaks on flank, streaked back, 2 white wing bars, greenish brown color visible in folded wing, thin warbler bill. No yellow lores and face not striped like black-throated gray. Sorry no photos so I hope someone can relocate it.

Leah Lewis (1 May 2017) - [Pelican Lake] - Black-bellied Plover. Larger plover with black along front and belly, white streak along side and extending up onto head. There were a total of 4 birds, but was only able to capture a photo of 3 together. One of the birds was in full breeding plumage, while the remaining 3 were in various states of alternate plumage. All BBPL had some portion of black showing on breast. Photo shows 3 BBPL with AMGP (center) in non-breeding plumage.
    -- American Golden-Plover. Watched this bird for 30 minutes. Was hanging out with a small group of 4 BBPLs. This bird was distinctly smaller when compared side by side with BBPL, which is a good indicator for possible AMGP. Bird had long primary projections, past the tail, when compared to BBPL (also good indicator for AMGP). Neck was slender and the bold white supercilium stood out with obvious dark cap on head. Bill size was smaller and delicate compared to BBPL. Finally, AMGP have a later spring breeding molt timeline compared to BBPL. All of the BBPL were in full or alternate breeding plumage compared to the AMGP which still showed nonbreeding plumage (expected for April).

The bird was a first year female with yellow undertail coverts, white belly, a small amount of yellow in the chest and a complete white eye ring. There was much more yellow in the wings than I would expect for a Virginia's.

Long scimitar-shaped wings, short body and tail (which it often spread in a round fan), hair-like extensions to tail feathers visible in flight & photos, all dark with slightly but noticeably paler throat area (fading to background dark by belly), rump noticeably paler, silent the entire time it was flying

Kristin Purdy (2 May 2017) - [Liberty, UT] - Lewis's Woodpecker. LEWO flew into the top of a dead cottonwood bare of bark with several woodpecker holes while I was looking for it. Historic location, appropriate habitat for the species. Salmon pink belly, dark head/face, gray collar encircling the neck, very dark back. Remained a few minutes, then flew north with strong rowing stroke type of flight pattern, not undulating flight.
