CWWI? At 9:45am, I was working a large mixed species foraging flock with a Pygmy Owl imitation, when from the forest upslope a Nightjar called once. Had a fluid melodious quality I was unfamiliar with. Defiantly not a Poorwill, so next most likely option is a Mexican Whip-Poor-Will, which I am familiar with, but they have a very gruff mechanical call, it did not match what I heard, so I played recordings of a Eastern Whip-Poor-Will for caparison, similar quality but wrong rhythm, I then tried a Chuck-Wills-Widow call, spot on match for what I had just heard! I returned at dusk and waited for it to get dark, it did not start calling on its own, so I played all of the above, nothing, nada, nilch, no Nightjar of any species called back. I'll have to leave that one as a mystery bird, will bug me for years to come no doubt. But what's life without a little mystery!

Diffuse/blurry streaking on breast and flanks. Wingbars indistinct. Too small to be a female blue grosbeak, and coloration just different enough to rule it out. In addition, the head and bill are noticeably much smaller than you would find on blue grosbeaks. The grosbeak has a heavy and chunky bill, where the bunting bill is daintier.
