Shyloh Robinson (29 February 2016) - [Farmington Bay WMA] - American Bittern. Seen appx 60 yards west of the airboat launch, North edge. Mid-sized wading bird with dagger like bill, streaked neck, dark malar stripes, plump body, relatively short(ish) legs, and unmarked topside (eliminating the more common Black-crowned Night-Heron). Seen crouched and in an upright bittern stance. Size compared with pelicans, blue herons, and coots. We watched the bittern under fading light for appx 15 minutes.

Dennis Shirley (4 February 2016) - [Lee Kay Ponds] - Glaucous-winged Gull. Was 1st year bird. First noted on ice edge, where it towered over accompanied CAGU and RBGUs. It was uniformly light brownish -gray plumage, no black in back, wing tips or tail. Had large all black bill, no pink, yellow or flesh colored base. Later observed floating on water and flying. Again noted size, light coloration, and bandless tail. Saw same or similar recorded bird at Farmington Bay WMA a few days earlier. Am familiar with species - do sea bird surveys on Western Aleutian Islands for USFWS. Used window mounted scope at 200 yards. No photos were taken. 19 species total:

Smooth more rounded head. Distance - 40ft. Used window mounted scope.

Dennis Shirley (2 February 2016) - [Salem Pond] - GREATER SCAUP. A hen. Was with flock of 12 LESC -1 male and 11 female. Noted more rounded, flattish topped head, no peak on rear of head like LESC. Slightly longer and wider bill, with prominent black tip - easily compared with female LESC with narrower, less black in tip. Overall plumage appeared browner, with a lighter brown ear patch on side of head. Stayed around edge of LESC flock. Had thick prominent white border around bill more than LESC. No photos were taken. Used window mounted scope -distance 150 yards. Watched for 15 minutes.

Mike Hearell (28 February 2016) - [Ogden Baby WMA] - Glaucous-winged Gull. 3rd cycle? Large gull, larger than Herring's and much larger than Ring-billed gulls that were in the area. Overall "dirty" gray appearance. Mantle was approx half way in and light gray. Primaries were just slightly darker than mantle with white edges. Bill was about 60% dark but had pale base. Dark Iris, pink-ish legs.
