BEAVER  COUNTY

Bryan Shirley (6 Dec 2014) - Last Saturday 5 of us made the trip down to Beaver & Iron Counties to work on the UCB Challenge.  We started at Minersville where we were able to locate over 40 species on the reservoir and the surrounding areas. There was a good variety of waterfowl on the lake, plus a couple of Pelicans and Common Loons as well. The area below the dam was very active with Cedar Waxwings, White-crowned & Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhee, etc...

BOX ELDER  COUNTY

Bryant Olsen (15 Dec 2014) - [Pocatello Valley Rd / 17200W Rd] -  Lapland Longspur. Mixed in with a decent sized flock of HOLA. First heard the calls of a Longspur in the HOLA when they all flushed, took me over an hour to get eyes on it and confirm it was a Lapland. Those buggers are hard to see in wheat stubble without snow.
-- Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk, American Kestrel, Prairie Falcon, Common Raven. Horned Lark, Lapland Longspur

BJ Worth (6 Dec 2014) - [Box Elder Campground] -
-- Canada Goose, Mallard, Bufflehead, Wild Turkey, Red-tailed Hawk, American Coot, Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon), Eurasian Collared-Dove, Northern Flicker, Steller's Jay, Western Scrub-Jay,
Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, American Robin, European Starling , Dark-eyed Junco, House Finch, Red Crossbill, American Goldfinch

CACHE COUNTY

Mike Fish / Ryan O'Donnell (20 Dec 2014) - [Green Canyon] - 18 species total:
-- Chukar, Great Horned Owl, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Black-billed Magpie, Clark's Nutcracker, Common Raven, Black-capped Chickadee, Mountain Chickadee, Brown Creeper, Canyon Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Townsend's Solitaire, American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, Pine Siskin

Ryan O'Donnell (17 Dec 2014) [an American White Pelican at the Logan Fish Hatchery Pond ]  "The continuing wing-tagged bird, apparently spending its second winter in the valley, number 51E. Previously photographed. I've dubbed this bird, "Craig.""

Ryan O'Donnell (17 Dec 2014) [a Greater Scaup at the Logan Sewage Lagoons ]  "Low rounded head, broad jowly look to the head from the front, broad bill. Larger than Lesser Scaup in direct side-by-side comparison. White wing stripe seen to extend boldly well into primaries when the bird flapped. Female type. Poor yet diagnostic photos will be added here, but probably not for a few days."

Ryan O'Donnell (9 Dec 2014) [another Lesser Black-backed Gull at the Logan Landfill ]  "This was NOT the same individual I photographed here on November 26. The head streaking is much less dense and less extensive on this bird. Also the bill is larger and longer, and the head more sloped. The primary projection also appears shorter, and most importantly, the mantle of this bird is paler, consistent with the expected subspecies on this continent,"

Ryan O'Donnell (4 Dec 2014) [Lesser Black-backed Gull continuing at the Logan Landfill - first seen on 26 Nov]  "Seemed very dark-mantled, with low contrast between wingtips and mantle color, and relatively small apical spots in the wings. Molting outer primaries..."

Weston Smith (20 Dec 2014) - We found the Greater White-fronted Goose reported by Mike yesterday at Clinton Pond. The bird as well as the four Cackling Geese and 150 Canada Geese were in the field just north of the pond....There were an additional three Greater White-fronted Geese about a mile south of the pond in a field with about 300 Canada geese and one Cackling Goose.

Shyloh Robinson (2 Dec 2014) - [Farmington WMA] - Rusty Blackbird, Probable, yet notable. Continuing? The bird stood out from a large flock of mixed blackbirds and starling. They all left the area before I could confirm ID thanks to the heavy feet of a passing jogger. Pretty sure it was a Rusty Blackbird, but not all-the-way sure. Seen at 20 range. Common Redpoll. Possible 2nd flushed. Small finch with small pointy yellow bill, maroon forehead, heavily streaked sides, and light pink breast. Confirmed audibles with playback. IRON COUNTY

Bryan Shirley (6 Dec 2014) - ...From there we headed south into Iron County. Our first stop was to enjoy the petroglyphs at Parowan Gap. It was a fun stop since none of us had ever been there. There weren't a lot of birds there but we did see a Canyon Wren and had a pair of Golden Eagles Soar past. After lunch we found a Red-Shouldered Hawk on a wire just west of Cedar City on the hwy toward New Castle (right at milepot 58). It was sitting on the telephone wire and every so often would jump off the wire and dive into the brush on the side of the road. Definately the highlight of the trip! Quichipa had quite a few birds at the far South end, but the distance and heat waves made it tough to ID most of them. New Castle Res. had a Common Loon & Horned Grebe, plus a few species of common waterfowl...

MORGAN  COUNTY

Weston Smith (3 Dec 2014) - I saw a RED-NECKED GREBE at East Canyon Reservoir at about 1pm today. When I first saw the bird it was about half way down the south arm of the reservoir. It was with about 10 Western Grebes near the area the Red-necked Grebe was seen last year. The bird then started moving north by itself staying towards the west side of the reservoir. When I left it was still by itself but was almost to the center of the reservoir... The two Long-tailed Ducks continue and were on the north side in a cove between the east arm that goes towards Henefer and the marina. There was one drake Barrow's Goldeneye at the south end of the reservoir... Also the Sandhill Crane continues in the field here in Croydon.

SALT LAKE COUNTY

Kendall Watkins (21 Dec 2014) - Yesterday our CBC group had a single Ross's Goose on the Target Pond in Lake Park. It was hanging out with Canada Geese on the grass west of the pond right next to the roundabout. We also counted 18 Cackling Geese throughout Lake Park.

Kendall Watkins (14 Dec 2014) - My dad and I, along with Billy Fenimore and two others saw the Brown-capped Rosy-Finch today at the Alta Town Office feeders. Also saw close to 10 Black Rosy-Finch and many Gray-crowned of both the "interior"and "Hepburn's" races. 18+ (!) Pine Grosbeaks, several Clark's Nutcrackers, and both Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees were also seen at the feeders.

Kendall Watkins (13 Dec 2014) - Snow Goose with a few Canada's near my house on 13400 S and 2700 W in Riverton...Lee Kay -- 1 Thayer's Gull, single Lesser Black-backed adult...

Bryant Olsen (8 Dec 2014) - [Alta, Utah] -   "Today I was up at Alta doing our monthly survey of the Ski Area, but had to drop off some seed donations at the Town Office. In the morning, there was a large mixed flock of Rosy-finches at our feeders, around 30 or so, but one of them caught my eye as being very dull. I had to get up the mountain so couldn't spend much time there to check it out like I wanted. Up in the ski area, the highlight was a male Dusky Grouse eating needles, thats right eating spruce, not fir, needles."  Also seen: Steller's Jay... Clark's Nutcracker, Mountain Chickadee... White-breasted Nuthatch (Interior West), Brown Creeper, Pine Grosbeak  in the top of a spruce ..."I saw my odd Rosy-finch again. It had black in the cap from the forehead to the nape, so the gray was limited to a narrow supercilium behind the eye, and even there it was very dull, all of this made this bird look very much like a Brown-capped Rosy-Finch!...

Norman Jenson (10 Dec 2014) [Lee Kay Ponds] - Lots of gulls including herring and Thayers. The Great Egret that has been there the last two weeks is still present Our favorite was the arrival of some hooded mergansers our first of the fall

Joe (2 Dec 2014) - Had an Blue Jay visit us in Emigration Canyon yesterday.

UTAH COUNTY

Jeff Cooper (20 Dec 2014) - I saw a Merlin doing something today that I'd never seen before--perching on a wire. It seemed that every small falcon I'd seen perching on a wire prior to this afternoon was a Kestrel. Rick Fridell (19 Dec 2014) - This Chestnut-sided Warbler was still present at Lytle Ranch (Washington Co.) this afternoon (12/19). It was first observed in the 'yard area' near the old house site and later in the cottonwoods along the fence north of the small trailer (with the Sommerfelds).  There was also a Red-breasted Sapsucker (first-winter, and apparently of the ruber subspecies) at the north edge of the orchard near the pomegranates...

Rick Fridell (6 Dec 2014) - I'll start with the best! This morning there was a flock of Pine Grosbeaks in the oaks on the northeast side of Kolob Reservoir. WEBER COUNTY

Kristin Purdy (24Dec 2014) - I made my weekly trip to Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County this afternoon to fill the feeders and was able to compose a top five list of birds that are stinkers all for the same reason: They were neither visible nor audible this past Saturday so we could record them there during the Ogden Christmas Bird Count. Here goes: 5. SONG SPARROW... 4. HERMIT THRUSH... 3. PACIFIC WREN...2. WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH...1. WESTERN SCREECH-OWL...

Weston Smith (9 Dec 2014) - This afternoon I took a trip out to see if the storm brought any Horned Larks down to the playas of western Weber County...Although I wasn't able to locate any Snow Buntings I was rewarded with many Lapland Longspurs... My eBird report lists 12 Laplands and 900 Larks but, I wouldn't be surprised if there were more like 3x that many.
