BOX ELDER COUNTY

Kris Purdy (8 May 2012) - I kayaked the Willard Spur in Box Elder County and came across six or so STILT SANDPIPERS in a flock of oh…..5,000-10-000 L-B Dowitchers. ... It took a surprisingly long time to pull the six Stilt Sandpipers out of the flock. They’re entirely in breeding plumage without the eye-catching supercilia of fall. Their smaller bodies were often obscured by their larger cousins.

Jason St. Sauver (6 May 2012) - Boy does it seem to be the weekend for most or all of the final migrants to return...at least to Box Elder Co. Just this weekend I've had FOY Wilson's and Yellow Warblers, Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Buntings, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Warbling Vireo....

Kris Purdy (6 May 2012) - I’m always impressed with the bird life at Raymond M. Hansen Park in Elwood, southeast of Tremonton in Box Elder County. I saw thirty species there this morning including a Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler and both Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks. Given the time of year and habitat...

Cindy Sommerfeld (4 May 22012) - ...--We decided to try our luck at Bear River. We were fortunate to find 5 Whimbrels right where Kris found them two days ago. A little further down the road Steve spotted a Merlin with prey...On the Loop we joined Jack Binch listening to 2 very vocal Bitterns. Our total at Bear River was 57 species
--From there we went to the west side of Willard Bay, north of Harold Crane. There Steve found 7 Black Terns along with hundreds of Forster's Terns. We were fortunate to get some close looks at a couple of Snowy Plovers...

Kris Purdy (2 May 2012) - Do eight WHIMBRELS qualify as a flock? Hope so. There were eight, along with 14 Long-billed Curlews, north of West Forest Street (road to Bear River MBR in Box Elder County) at mile 8.4...

CACHE COUNTY

Mike Fish (18 May 2012)- [Logan] - The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is still visiting my feeders (Third day in a row).

Ron Hellstern (6 May 2012) - Bullocks Orioles and Black-chinned Hummers are competing for nectar at the feeders. Also a Lazuli Bunting made an appearance. We're along the Blacksmith Fork River in Cache Valley.

Mike Fish (5 May 2012) - [Logan] - Tonight I had 4 Calliope Hummingbirds in my yard, along with 5 Broadtailed and one Black-chinned. I'm afraid my nectar feeders will be frozen in the morning. I'm amazed that those tiny bodies can survive the freezing temps....

CARBON COUNTY

Steve Christensen (14 May 2012) - Flammulated Owl in Carbon County.

Lloyd and Connie Logan (10 May 2012) - I looked out my kitchen window at about 7PM this evening and saw an adult Scissor-tailed Flycatcher sitting on the power lines behind our house. The location was the intersection of Utah 123 and Denver Avenue in East Carbon (west side of Sunnyside Park), Carbon County, Utah. The bird sat on the power lines long enough for my wife to come to the window and see it too. ... Having grown up in Kansas and Missouri and lived for 6 years in Texas, we are very familiar with this species - absolutely no doubt as to the identification (fifteen yards, facing us, and the sun at our back).

DAVIS COUNTY

Norm Jenson (30 May 2012) - We birded Farmington Bay today with the Salt Lake Audubon, thanks Bryant and Deedee, lots of great looks at good birds, nothing too unusual, though a couple of Blue-winged Teals are always a nice find...

Edson Leite (29 May 2012) - [Garr Ranch] - Beth and I spent most of the afternoon at Fielding Garr Ranch, Antelope Island... [The park guy] mentioned he saw a Rose-breasted Grosbeak earlier that morning, at the end of the spring near the cattails and russian olives. We were there looking for it for a just a couple of minutes when if flew out of the ground and to the tree in front of us allowing for great looks, it is a male looks pretty weak though. The female American Redstart was in the cottonwoods doing its rounds with a Wilson's Warbler.

Joel Beyer (27 May 2012) - An adult male Chestnut-sided Warbler was seen around the spring area today about noon

Pat Jividen (15 May 2012) - [Antelope Island] - Ned Bixler, Doug Mead and I had a great day at the causeway. We were there for 31/2 hours and hated to leave. Doug picked up 4 life birds and Pat 1.
We saw about seven Ruddy Turnstones at about mile marker 6 about 150 yards out but great looks width the scope...  -- [Buffalo Ranch Ponds] - We also stopped by here. Neotropic Cormorant, ... Black-crowned Night Heron, Franklin's Gull, Brewer's sparrow, a few ducks

Keeli Marvel (11 May 2012) - Ten Utah County Birders met this morning for a field trip to Antelope
Is. Causeway and Garr Ranch. Highlights of the trip included:  --Four or so AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER interspersed with the hundreds of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, a couple of SNOWY PLOVER and a couple of SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, a few dozen peeps (most IDd as WESTERN SANDPIPERS) and several RED KNOTS all between miles 5 and 6 on the mud flats on the north side of the road.  --A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, SAY'S PHOEBE, BARN OWL fledglings, and a WILSON'S WARBLER at Garr Ranch   --A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on the way to Garr Ranch

Cindy Sommerfeld (6 May 2012) - [Antelope Island] -... Paul Higgins accompanied Steve and I to try once again to complete our May Antelope Island Survey...The temperature and wind kept the bugs to a minimum.  --On the Causeway we were excited to find 26 Red Knots. --On the Island were were privileged to watch a Short-eared Owl chase a Red-tailed Hawk in an aeronautic battle. After a bit the Red-tail gave up. --On the road to the ranch we watched 5 Swainson's Hawks soaring together. They weren't in much of a hurry because we found them still lazily soaring together, on our way back from the ranch. --At Garr Ranch we found 2 Green-tailed Towees.
65 was today's species total...

Bryant Olsen (2 May 2012) - Yesterday I spent the night on Antelope Island, and saw many good birds on the way there and back. First stop was at Farmington Bay, where I saw my first YELLOW WARBLER of the year, plus 9 WOOD DUCKS, both along Farmington creek near the nature center, and 100's of LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. "
--Then on the AIC: First good bird was an apparent AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER (maybe the same one that's been around for awhile) mixed in with the hundreds of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS... Also on the AIC were several RED KNOTS, and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and later, 2 DUNLIN, and 20 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS (all 4 were lifers!). Also lots of MARBLED GODWITS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS,1 SANDERLING, and some WILSON'S PHALAROPE, plus at the first bridge 100 or so BONAPARTE'S GULLS....Near Bridger Bay campground I had a BURROWING OWL, and saw my foy SNOWY PLOVER on the beach (making it a 5 plover day!). In the morning a SHORT-EARDED OWL was flying around, making it a 5 owl trip including the BARN, GREAT HORNED, and LONG-EARED OWLS I saw elsewhere. In the morning the number of shorebirds on the causeway was way down from the day before, maybe the PEREGRINE FALCON hanging around has something to do with that (bad falcon!).
--Stopped at Buffalo Ranches pond on the way home, and saw 1 NEOTROPIC CORMORANT plus a HORNED GREBE in breeding plumage and heard a SORA nearby....

GARFIELD COUNTY

Mike Fish (31 May 2012) - [Panguitch] - Dusky Flycatcher in Panguitch, Utah. Thank You Steve in Cedar City and to the others who responded.

JUAB COUNTY

Candy Zaffis (14 May 2012) - Had a good birding day from Dugway to Fish Springs on Sunday, May 13th. Got a great photo of the Eastern Kingbird in the picnic area. Even tho the ponds are REALLY low at Fish Springs, the birds that were there seemed to be more concentrated, so it was easier to see multiple species - I'm sure I missed some shorebirds because the bugs were biting really badly, and we couldn't stay out with the Scope for too long without getting swarmed or bit!!
--Black-throated Sparrows (3 at the Geode beds), Barn Swallows, Ravens, Horned Larks, Meadowlarks, Western Kingbirds, Eastern Kingbird, Mourning doves, Eurasian collared doves, Yellow-rumped warblers, Says Phoebe, Many misc flycatchers,  , Yellow-headed blackbirds, Brown-headed cowbirds, Red-winged blackbirds, Brewer's blackbirds, Magpie, Starlings, Yellow warblers, White-crowned sparrows, House sparrows, Sage sparrows, Sage thrashers, Killdeer, Goldfinch, Western Tanagers, Bullock's Orioles, Black-chinned hummingbirds, Northern Flicker, Robins, Shrike, Mockingbirds, Coots, Northern Harriers, Red-tailed Hawk (flying withe a snake), Golden Eagle, Kestrels , Snowy egrets, American Bittern, Pelicans, Mallards, Redheads, Canada Geese, Long-billed Curlew, White-faced Ibis, Black necked stilts, Am Avocets, Terns, Gulls, Grebes, Shovelers, Teals, Scaups, Mergansers

MILLARD COUNTY

David J. Allan (30 May 2012) - ...On Sunday, 5/27, I had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD visiting my yard hummingbird feeders (Oak City, Millard Co). That was a first for me in Millard Co and my yard. Also had a Red-breasted Grosbeak spend the day in my backyard. Another bird of interest was a leucistic-pied Mourning Dove. Unfortunately, none of these were seen again Monday. Sunday was very colorful. I recorded seventeen species in the yard. Besides those listed above, I recorded Lazuli Bunting, Bullock's Oriole, Western Tanager, California Quail, House Finch, American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinch, Black-headed Grosbeak, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Barn Swallow, American Robin, Cooper's Hawk, House Sparrow, and Eurasian Collared-dove.    --Within the fort itself, I saw the most beautiful American Robin I’ve ever seen, due completely to the bird’s partial albinism. This bird was about ¾ albinistic and looked like it had sustained a barrage of snowballs that stuck all over. He was a quite brilliant element as he foraged on the dry, shady forest floor...
